HELSINKI (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin arrived at the presidential palace in Finland for a long-awaited summit on Monday after Trump blamed Washington's own past "foolishness and stupidity" for bad relations.

The Russian foreign ministry "liked" Trump's comments on Twitter ahead of the summit, in which Trump denounced the investigation into Russian meddling in American elections as well as previous U.S. policy.

"Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!" wrote Trump.

The two leaders were due to start their summit in the Finland capital Helsinki with no one else in the room apart from interpreters. They were scheduled to hold a working lunch accompanied by aides later on Monday before speaking to media.

So you're okay with continuing Obama's policy of turning a blind's eye to Russia's march through Eastern Europe?  How do you feel about Russia's sponsorship of Iran in Syria?  Is this what you like?

I told I hate the Evil Empire.. Also, what is Trump going to do about it? I haven't seen Trump complained about Russia.

I've thought so since Bush I. After decades of doing everything to thwart the Soviet Union we did little to assure the new Russia would be a Western state.

That isn't what you said.  You said you liked the previous US policy toward Russia and want it to continue.  You disagreed with the President's assessment that US policy has been foolish.  You know ... like Ukraine, Syria, Uranium.  BTW, the President's complaints about our foolishness under Obama are telling you what he doesn't like about Russia.

Right now our Marines are training the Ukranians ...http://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/topic,324557.0.html

As to what else the President will want to do about Russia ... well, we're know soon enough.   ^-^

It’s foolish to pretend we’re still living in Cold War 1950’s.

There are no bigger capitalists than ex-pat Russians living in America, of which there are millions. While the internet continues breaking down barriers it’s time we moved on. The world is ready for a new era of Russian–American cooperation.

But not German-Russian cooperation.  I mean, we just heard how buying energy from them is the worst thing in the world.

And I don't trust this president.  The way he's been talking lately, it seems he's in awe of this dictator, as he was of Kim, and will most likely let  Putin walk all over him.

Hmmm...he blames the U.S. for the Norks inability to keep up their end of any bargain...then blames the U.S. for crappy Russian relations.

I see a trend here.

Tell that to Putin...he doesn't seem to have gotten that message.  He's busy reconstituting the old Soviet Union...modernizing his conventional and nuclear forces...introducing new ammunition...armor and tech into his forces while we're too damn busy making sure we have politically correct female Infantry and Ranger candidates.

Have fun deluding yourself into thinking that with Vlad in the Kremlin there will ever be friendly relations with the USSR.

Why don’t you look at the history of the original project, when it was proposed, what EU countries were involved, and how long it took from inception to beginning construction, before you say such clownish things.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson certainly complained about what Russia was doing in Ukraine, said that Crimea was not Russia. I believe they've criticized Russia in Syria.

Do you not remember when Trump said how can Russia be working with an "animal" like Assad? Let alone the airstrikes and yes, people can play that down. How about up to 250 Russian mercenaries killed in Syria? Okay, I can see one saying we had to defend oneself.

9. He has taken a surprisingly tough line with Russia. Trump approved a $47 million arms package for Ukraine, sent troops to Poland's border with Russia and imposed new sanctions on Moscow for violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

When the poisoning occurred in the UK against the Skripals, we stood in solidarity with the UK against the Russians being suspected of this.

Accusing Germany of being controlled by Russia over oil, certainly was not "pro-Russia". Especially, if Germany were to end up purchasing more of their oil from us.

Still, I think the Administration can even be harsher on Russia.  I think he is pragmatic in the sense, we do need to work together, they are the 2nd most powerful nation on earth.  Tillerson certainly talked Russia down, one reason I liked Rex, probably the main reason.

Russia under Putin:

Waged continuous & increasingly aggressive cyberattacks against us
Interfered in our 2016 elections
Annexed Crimea
Shot down a civilian airliner
Supports Assad in Syria
Invaded our ally Georgia
Murdered opponents in London

"Once again, President Trump mentioned issue of the so-called interference of Russia with the American elections," Putin said. "I had to reiterate things I said several times, including during our personal contacts, that the Russian state has never interfered and is not going to interfere in internal American affairs, including election process."

@EWErickson

I don’t the our current President should be attacking American institutions abroad any more than I thought the last President should be abroad apologizing for parts of the American legacy.

Trust, but verify.

I think Trump's efforts to establish mutual respect between Russia and the U.S. is admirable.  We will always have deep differences but we certainly can't resolve them on the battlefield.
Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.
