It works. My dad got hooked and his fishing buddy did that to remove the hook.

If you mean, 'will the hook come out?', the answer is yes, if you pull hard enough.

If you mean, 'can I press down on the skin enough to avoid the barb pulling out a bunch of skin?', the answer is no.  For God's sake that would be hard enough if you were sober.

I'm of the 'push it on through' method. If you do push it on through right away, while the area is still shocked, it don't even hardly hurt...

Then snip the barb off (actually easier to snip the shaft most times) and pull it out.

But, in the event that you don't have snippers on you, this is prolly second best...
