Brett Kavanaugh accumulated thousands in credit card debt from buying Washington Nationals tickets: Report
by Diana Stancy Correll
 | July 11, 2018 07:45 PM

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh accumulated credit card debt from buying baseball tickets, a new report says.

Kavanaugh reported incurring between $60,000 to $200,000 in credit card debt in 2016, the Washington Post reports. He additionally reported having the same amount of debt in 2006, the year he joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

In both cases, the debt was spread between three credit cards and a loan.

According to the White House, Kavanaugh’s debt was accrued from purchasing Washington Nationals regular season and playoff tickets for himself and several friends, White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah told the Post. Shah also revealed that a portion of the debt was from home improvements.

Kavanaugh has since been reimbursed by his friends for the tickets, and he no longer buys season tickets, Shah said.

Reporting requirements from 2017 indicate that Kavanaugh no longer has the debt, or that the debt was below the reporting requirements.

Kavanaugh is the second Supreme Court justice President Trump has nominated. Neil Gorsuch was Trump’s first pick; he was confirmed to the seat vacated by the late Antonin Scalia.

Who writes this shit?

He fixed up his house.  And paid off the card and loan debt.   He was a season ticket holder, and advanced funds for playoff tickets for his friends.    And his friends reimbursed him.

Who writes this shit?

The media is going to scrutinize everything in Judge Kavanaugh's life, looking for a negative to hang him with.

I guess tomorrow, if he doesn't kiss his wife goodbye before going to work, the media will report that Judge Kavanaugh is an abusive husband.

SIGH!

Wow. A man used a legal instrument to purchase items on time and then payed it off. Next the MSM will be going after him because a big evil bank gave him money to buy a house........and charged him to do it.

In other words, he used his credit card to buy stuff and paid it off.  Like a lot of people.

That’s okay, they have a really hard scoop on him next in line...his name is Brett, kind of like a frat boy.

A real conservative pays as he goes, and doesn't amass credit card debt for enjoyment, like baseball games. Mortgage or car loans, okay, but Baseball?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. Thought I'd get it in before the crowd shows up. I think he's a nice pick, not great, but nice. I am a huge baseball fan)

Digging into a person's personal finances should not be allowed.  Now, if there was a bankruptcy there would be a public record of that, but personal month to month buying and paying is no one's business.  I did win a large amount at a casino last year and did have to pay tax on that as it was above the amount allowed to win.  When I won it, a person came and got my info. while I was still at the machine, and she left and came back with a federal 1099 tax form filled out. I paid that tax when I filled out my next income tax form.  Other than that, my buying and payments are no one business.  I feel sorry for this man whose entire life is now on display.  I don't care what he bought - he is in his early 50s, that is a long life to be splayed apart for everyone to see.

Didn't you call for the release of Trumps tax returns?

I didn't read that he run the debt for many months.  They story still reads true if he paid off the balance in full the first time it came due.  But then the writers want you to think he might have been irresponsible like you imagine, they just didn't actually say that.

If he bought for friends who reimbursed, it might have taken a month or so.  Also home repairs are easily run through a credit card like a store card for a discount.

No, it is not required by law.

So he is a normal sports fan? I know cowboys fans who run up debt like this every year.

The only problem is his choice of teams.

Of course it should, especially in the case of a judge. You need to see if there are financial irregularities indicating acceptance of bribes or rulings with conflicts of interest.  I suspect, however, much of this was already done with the vetting for his prior approval.   On the surface, baseball tickets don’t seem to be like a very big deal. Just recently, we learned FBI agents were getting gifted tickets by members of the press. It’s not always innocuous, though Kavanaugh does not show signs of using his purchases for favors.

So I read the source article in WaPo.  Seems WaPo is more concerned that  Kavanaugh disclosed what they consider a minimal amount of assets, particularly compared to his debts.  I guess WaPo thinks Kavanaugh did not fully disclose his assets, alough the article doesn't actually say so.

But it looks to me like WaPo is comparing Kavanaugh's bottom line to the present SCOTUS judges.  I don't think that comparison is fair.  Of course, one would expect the current justices would make more than Kavanaugh. WaPo even mentions that justices also earn money from sidelines such as speaking engagements.  Kavanaugh would not have the prestige for such side income.

This is all much ado about nothing.  Unless WaPo can prove Kavanaugh is hiding assets or income, this is just a hit piece.

By the way, I wonder if WaPo investigated Merrick Garland or the justices appointed during Obama's rule to see if they were hiding any assets. I don't recall reading similar pieces about Sotomayor or Kagan.

Well at least it's not as big as the "Rubio drinks water" scandal that Polutico tried to create. A scandal about how Rubio drinks water.

The guy loves water. Shocking.

You apparently don't "get" the game here.   It's not the actual guilt or innocense that matters.  It's the appearance of impropriety (that can be reported on and ginned up by the rabid left) that is the issue.  But more and more folks are seeing how untrustworthy the lying left media is.... so it may just backfire on them.

Yeah, I was just goofing off.
There is nothing here that suggest he filed bankruptcy over credit card debt, or anything like that.
