Proposed ‘buddy dive’ plan to rescue boys trapped in Thai cave could launch this weekend: EXCLUSIVE

A proposed plan to rescue the boys soccer team trapped in a partly flooded cave in northern Thailand could launch as soon as this weekend, ABC News has learned.

 According to an internal U.S. government report obtained by ABC News, the Royal Thai navy, supported by divers from the United Kingdom, the United States and other nations, has briefed Thai military leadership, interior ministry officials and the provincial governor on a proposed operation to evacuate the 12 boys and their coach from the miles-long cave in Chiang Rai province, alongside experienced divers in what is being called a “buddy dive.” Thailand’s prime minister will be briefed on the proposal Saturday morning local time.

Despite the risks, the accelerated timeline would take advantage of the children still having high oxygen levels within the cave complex, their relatively good health and also the fact that this would occur before the heavy rains are forecast to hit the region Sunday, which could raise water levels inside the cave and make a rescue mission even more precarious, according to the document.

A decision timeline was unknown.

I saw a diagram of this cave and there are many very small spaces one has to go through to get out of there.  Two people won't fit in those small spaces - even one person has to maneuver his body through those small spaces and it takes hours to get out as the flooded part of the tunnel is so long - 2 and 1/2 miles.  One diver has died due to running out of air when he was getting out. I just don't see how those boys can make it out due to the flooded tunnel being so long and so many small spaces - I repeat the flooded part of the tunnel is 2 1/2 miles.  My heart just sunk when I saw that - TWO AND ONE HALF MILES OF FLOODED TUNNEL.

I expect that they will need to stash O2 bottles along the route so that no one runs out.  They've got bad choices and worse choices.  No good choices, and things will get worse the longer they wait.

To move this to the top for today.

I heard this morning, they have to try to save them today as rains start tomorrow, Sunday.  They are also trying to drill down to that space so air and food, meds, can get to them that way. 

There is also a big underground cavern associated with that area but a long way from where they are, and they are trying to get a cable through that area and into where they are, to deliver oxygen.  I don't know where that stands today.

TV JUST SAID there is a new plan to get them out today - they had interview with a guy who is there and he said there is a new plan but he didn't say what that is.

This reporter said the rain has started as it was raining on him while he was speaking.

The rain has been such a concern...and it doesn't look like it's going to stop until Oct.

If the oxygen level in the cave is such a concern have they run a line into where the boys are to supply fresh air? Also I wonder what the possibilities/problems would be in boring a hole down to them as they did with the miners in Chile.

I don't know how these kids and their families are bearing this.  If ever there was proof of power in prayer, this would have to be in the top three on the list.

From what I have read, depending which one is correct...one story said they tried to get an oxygen line there and couldn't. But another story said they got the line there. So who knows???

Also from what I have read...the land above the cave is a big time jungle...so they can't get a crew there to drill.  So who knows? @GtHawk

I read today that conditions were at an optimen to get them out. But then I read that it's raining....so who the he!! knows??

See, that's the thing, if they had trouble getting in an oxygen line then how the heck would it be possible to put a thirty inch tube in place?
And there are heavy equipment that could clear a path even in jungle.

The rescue effort has begun. I saw on tonight's news that the rain is starting.

Let's remember 38-year-old retired Thai SEAL Sgt. Major Saman Gunan, who volunteered to deliver oxygen tanks to the trapped party and died doing so.

It is 11:38 pm, central time.  They have started the operation and the first boy is expected out at 10 am eastern time.  I read earlier, they will take out the strongest boy first so he will make it and give the remaining ones psychological strength that they can do it, too.

@Freya, Hi.

I believe this cbs link, where I got that information is updating the survival attempt as it happens but they likely won't know if the divers/kid have trouble when trying to get out as they can't communicate with those outside. Either the divers/kid comes out by 10 am eastern and if they don't show up, something happened when they tried to get out.  This is so "iffy" that they will make it out.
