That's very oddly appropriate.

My mind moves in strange and mysterious ways.  As soon as I saw the titles, I immediately thought of that particular strip.  Cal's Dad was a genius.  Just ask him.

Sophistry?  How so?  We don't know that what they were talking about were sapphires.  Could have been emeralds for all we know.  We may have decided they were sapphires by assuming what we now know as blue was what they were talking about, therefore the jewel must be sapphire.

'WE' didn't define it. There is a gap of thousands of years between us and them, neatly filled with Hebrew tradition. The tassels on an Hebrew cloak have ever had that blue thread. But that is a single example. The old standard of Israel was a golden harp on a blue background - hearkening all the way back to David. The tiles on the walls of Babylon were blue.Blue was used in paint in both Egypt and Crete. to suggest they knew blue in all those places, but not in the area in between is just silly.

Surely with a moniker like @HoustonSam you are not immune to the concept that rednecks often use made-up words and colloquialisms to describe a concept distinctly where vocabulary is otherwise insufficient or laborious.

I'm of the hillbilly species, of the genus redneck, and one might say we use colloquialisms right smart ourselves.

Quote

Hence my example of cattywompus, which may describe quite a few different concepts: Splayed, out-of-square, out of line, non-contiguous, and by analogy, nonconforming or unusual in a weird or unkind sense.

I have an ISO audit to supervise in my work later this month, and I think I'll introduce "cattywompus" as a distinct category of non-conformance in our audit findings.  It should help people more fully understand the whole concept.....

Our discussion has already surpassed my rudimentary competence at linguistics.  I always appreciate your take on things @roamer_1.

LOL! Well, it oughta work in Texas and in the west. Down South you might need to use 'whockerjawed' which I think is a close comparable.

No, not quite.  We assume "blue" when we see "sapphire", but it's not even clear that they were talking about what we know as sapphires or even blue sapphires. Sapphires are "typically blue, but natural "fancy" sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors; "parti sapphires" show two or more colors." (Wikipedia)

So you are arguing that there was nothing blue back then? Holy moly.

Hmmm...I wonder when the sky changed color?  And I wonder what it was before?

Somewhat the same is true in country navigation instructions...

Ya go down the old dirt road until you git to the old church that burned down by lightnin, then you hook a left. Go on down till you git to the big forked oak and make a right. Soon you'll see that place where Homer Dean kilt that deer last year and you know you're close. Keep going past the old store and look for a mailbox on the left. Look close cause it's buried in some honeysuckle vines. When you see it, turn on the driveway for a mile or so, and there she be. The old house yalls is lookin fur.

When I was younger I used to do deliveries. When I got off the highway and got lost, this was typical for the kind of directions I would get.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

When I was younger I used to do deliveries. When I got off the highway and got lost, this was typical for the kind of directions I would get.

I am guilty of that myself. It is more true here in the Rockies than elsewhere, because all navigation is by landmark, handrail, and backstop. Direction is nearly useless, other than in the general sense.

And just to add to the fun, I often refer to businesses that have been long gone, or renamed for decades.

"You go on up to the Buttreys over yonder, right across from the Roy Stanley's... and head out toward Fisher's place"

Well, yeah that's right... But Roy Stanly Chevrolet hasn't been there since my first kid was born, and the Buttreys has been an Albertson's for about 15 years... And the Fisher's moved off half a lifetime ago.
