Portland Police declared a riot Saturday after tensions between the right-wing Patriot Prayer group and local anti-fascist activists came to a head and broke out in violence.

The afternoon began with a permitted rally at Terry Schrunk Federal Plaza organized by Joey Gibson, U.S. Senate candidate for Washington and leader of the right-wing, Vancouver-based group.

A counter-demonstration by masked local anti-fascist groups gathered nearby among a heavy police presence. Officers seized weapons such as utility knives, clubs and chemical sprays, detaining several protesters early on.

It just pisses me off that Antifa is referred to as the "anti-fascist" group.   8888madkitty

Well, at least these guys had a permit.  Pittsburgh is having almost daily protests over the kid that was shot by police, but those protesters don't bother to get a permit.  When asked about that, city officials said they don't want to infringe on their free speech rights.

With temperatures of 90 degrees or more for at least the next week, I expect someone is going to get  fed up enough to infringe on those protesters' rights in a violent way.

I wonder if there doesn't exist a law against wearing them.

No, the mask will block the heat. I have a FLIR camera at home. Plus the infrared image won't show you anything useful.

Doubtful.  And doubtful a law that prohibited masked protests would pass muster under the First.

United States
There are anti-mask laws in many U.S. states and the District of Columbia.[1]

New York State's anti-mask law was enacted in 1845, to provide for public safety after disputes between landlords and tenants.[2]
Many anti-mask laws date back to the mid-20th century when states and municipalities, passed them to stop the violent activities of the Ku Klux Klan, whose members typically wore hoods of white linen to conceal their identities.[3][4]
In the 21st century those laws have been applied to political protesters such as those affiliated with the Occupy Movement or Anonymous – wearing Guy Fawkes masks.[5][6][7][8]
In some areas motorcyclists have been arrested using anti-masking laws.[9]
Anti-mask laws have also been used against ANTIFA.
These laws have been challenged on the grounds that they violate the guarantees of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution to free speech and free association. Some courts have weighed freedom of speech against the public safety interest, and upheld such laws. For example, the Georgia Supreme Court found the law constitutional on the grounds that the wearing of the mask was an act of intimidation and a threat of violence, which is not protected speech.[10] That law has exceptions for holiday celebrations, theatre performances, and occupational safety; the ruling makes it unclear if someone is violating the law if they wear a mask without the intent to threaten violence. A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld a New York law on the ground that wearing a Ku Klux Klan mask did not convey a protected message beyond that conveyed by wearing a hood and robe.[2] Other courts have struck down anti-mask laws. For example, Tennesee and Florida state laws have been invalidated on the grounds that they were unconstitutionally broad.[10] An ordinance in Goshen, Indiana, was struck down based on First Amendment doctrine that specifically protects anonymous speech and anonymous association, especially for unpopular groups like the KKK.[2]

Like I said, doubt exists - as in, it may not be upheld.

Antifa member gets KTFO.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.     -Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."     -Ayn Rand-

The conservatives must have been winning, so it had to be declared a riot.

Note to self: if you're going to attend any public events with the words "patriot" or "prayer" in them, take large, competent men with you.

Wiki on candidate Gibson:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Gibson_(political_activist)

and on Prayer Patriot

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Prayer

"Gibson describes himself politically as a "moderate libertarian",[9][10] but his organization has been described in the media as "alt-right".[11][12] Gibson denies that his group is alt-right, and has disavowed white supremacists who frequently appear at his events."

They got the permit. Wiki is decidedly slanted, yet neither write up says they initiated violence

They are pro-Trump, denounce racism and violence. Are called alt-right and right wing despite their claims to the contrary.

Identity politics run amuck. Post modernism, putting anyone in a category if the agree or not.

If you have been watching, the New Left, tries to categorize anybody to the right of Chairman Mao, as "alt-right," racist," "right wing," in their hierarchy of victimhood groupings.

Their aim is to depriveothers of their Free Speech, by shouting them off campus, or even violence by their Antifa communist thugs.

"God must love the common man, he made so many of them.  Abe Lincoln

Here's my question --- WHO HAD THE PERMIT TO MARCH?

Answer: the Patriots

Here's what I want to find the answer to: Did the Antifa obtain a permit to mount a counter protest?

If not, what they did was illegal. Not only that, the Cops should have been there PROTECTING the party that legally obtained the permit.

If Antifa did obtain a permit ( and I don't know that), who was the idiot who gave them the permit knowing that the Patriots would be marching in the same area at that time?

It would appear (from the story) there was only one permit, from the Patriots.  Their permit was revoked because of the attacks on their protest.  Another successful application of the "heckler's veto" by the fascist Left.

Well, if this had occurred in The United States you would be correct, sadly this happened in the socialist realm of Portlandia. There are numerous socialist realms across America, realms like Seattle, San Francisco, Sacramento, Berkeley, Austin, Dallas, Houstin, to name a very few.

"Anti-fascists"....notice they never use the acronym ANTIFA.

And yet, they're the ones demonstrating the essence of Fascism.

Stepped inside that last baton swing and clipped him right in the sweet spot. As if he'd done it before.
