Yeah, remember all the judicial rulings Trump cited when Gorsuch was nominated and the arm twisting/log rolling he did to get him through the Senate?  Me neither.  Gorsuch was a good choice, because The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation did all the legwork, then McConnell nuke optioned his way through confirmation.  Nice embellishments, though.

Nobody will ever give McConnell credit, though.

Excellent indeed!

I belonged to two unions while working my way through college.
Teamsters and Railroad. The Teamsters were less than useless.

I give him credit for stalling Garland, but I still don’t trust him overall.

This makes me very happy.

The obvious reason being that the government unions will not be able to send as much campaign money to liberals, who they vote for to keep their government jobs.

Also, I've never liked the idea that,as their employers, "We the People", shouldn't have to be subjected to collective bargaining and strikes, by the people we hire to (somewhat) help us (poorly) run our government(s).
Even FDR (of all people) was against public sector unions.

(Did I use enough parenthesis, or should there have been more?)

Including public employee unions? This is epic.

It is epic, particularly because they included government workers.

I worked for a big labor union for 16 years.  This will be devastating to unions although many states, including Texas, had already pass 'right-to-work' laws.

Mark my words:

The union-controlled states will pass a "union tax:" any person who opts out of a labor union must pay a tax equal to the dues of the union in their company.

This will be based on Roberts and the Obamacare precedent.

Not happening, Jimmy, the tide has turned.

Every state is Right to Work now. This is the biggest SC ruling since Roe.

I've been quite pleased with the Court in the last few days.  Bravo!

I agree it is a big deal.  But only in states that already allowed people not to join the union.

But this applies to government workers as well, who do not fall under state laws.

Was on the other side (mgt.) for 30+ years.  Back in the '70's and even to the early '80's the unions had an incredible amount of clout dictating what they wanted.  Slowly but surely that influence has waned.  Now they are about to the point of total non-revelance.

This country will be immensely better off for it.

It only applies to government workers.  This is only for public service unions.  It is not for business unions like UAW, AFL-CIO, IBEW, etc...

The union I worked for was national and included a lot of states that did not have right to work laws.

The worse thing about unions is their political activity.  I had to stamp 'Mondale/Ferraro on all our outgoing mail.  Plus, they required members to 'donate' to their political action committees which worked for liberals, of course.

I wish someone would pass a law against requiring members to contribute to political activities.  A lot of the members were Republicans in real life and still had to support democrats financially.

Interesting.  Wish it was Kagan but she'll hang on till 2020.  I hope he finds someone almost as good as Gorsuch.

Ginsburg is old but I don't think she's sick.  Those famous pictures of her dozing off don't represent her lifestyle.  The thing is Ginsburg loves being on the court.  It's better than a bridge club for her.

Plus, she has a personal trainer and can do more pushups than Arnold.  She'll hang till the end.

Yes.  The case does not affect private sector unions because there is no "state action" that implicates the Constitution when you're talking about private sector labor agreements.  And trust me on this, I'm a labor lawyer.

Some states have "Right to Work" laws that permit employees to opt out of joining unions and not pay anything.  Such laws usually (but not always) apply to both public and private sector unions.  Without a Right to Work law, private sector employees can be required to join the union.

Public sector law is a bit different.  Employees can never be required to join the union, even if there is no "Right to Work" law.  However, employees who chose not to join the union still could be required to pay a "fair share" fee (usually around 90%) , which is supposed to be that percentage of union dues that goes only to representational activities, such as negotiating contracts.  The purpose of that was to prevent the employees from being compelled to contribute to a public sector union's political activities.  Truth is, there was always a shitload of overlap.  Anyway, because public sector employees could be required to pay that fair share fee, most just joined the union anyway.  And that is what has changed.

What this decision said is that public sector employees cannot be required to pay even this fair share fee.  They can opt-out completely from paying anything at all to the union.  This is really huge politically, because public sector unions are the most powerful of all Democrat constituencies.  The result of this is that those unions will lose an awful lot of membership over time.

And the speculation is that people will stast leaving the unions in droves and even filing class action lawsuits for being forced to pay dues. The Dems are scared.

Stalling Garland wasn't difficult.  It was Obama's gift to Hillary.  None of the Democrats expected Trump to win, so they were letting Hillary make the pick instead of Obama.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

Right, but it goes beyond just the money paid to Democrats and their causes.  Bloated public sector unions keep lots of people on the payroll who basically function as professional agitators/protesters.  When you see those nutbag rallies, you can be pretty sure that there are a lot of hired union goons in there.

This is going to really hurt those unions in the pocketbook, and that means they won't be able to keep nearly as many of those people on the payroll.  Those bogus "grassroots" protests, particularly in cities, will lose a good chunk of their activists.

Excellent point, never thought about that.

I don't know, though.  Many die-hard conservative teachers join NEA because of the insurance and backing of the union if someone goes after you legally.

Years ago our governor proposed a state funded insurance program for public employees for that very reason, so that they wouldn't be beholden to the union.
