I’ll give trump credit where credit is due, he appointed Gorsuch. Who knows what borrow Hillary would have appointed?

I'm wondering what practical effect if any this decision will have on union negotiating activities, specifically, collective bargaining.

Very little, although the fact that they will end up representing a smaller percentage of workers likely will reduce their bargaining power during negotiations to some extent.  But they'll still have to have people at the bargaining table -- that's sort of the one thing they cannot stop doing.

Where it really will hurt them is in activism.  With fewer dues-paying members, they won't be able to have as many staffers spending time on activism.

Either Garland, or someone more liberal.  Either way, we would't have gotten any of these decisions that have gone our way.  Good chance we'd also be on track to lose Citizen's United and Heller.

Coming through on SCOTUS was the biggest thing Trump has done.

More significantly, this will cost the unions money and they are cash cows for the Democratic party. Expect a major reaction that will loud and full of fury over this. They will accuse Trump of the genocide of Amish children over this. Puppy genocide. Baby manatee genocide. They will peg the unhinged meter because the vast majority of American either don't care about this or support the ruling. The Democrats will have to make them care. The children of union workers will be torn from the breasts of their mothers by Trump and hurled into a raging furnace before the week is over.

Collective bargaining will still go on.

Probably, but negotiating employee salaries with another public employee won't be nearly as fun.

At any rate I fully expect this will put black garbed primary school teachers armed with pikes on the front lines.

This is huge.  I have always been a proponent that our loss of industrial base in the past 50 or so years has been that wages are not competitive on a world stage. (Added envirowhacko and lawsuit abuse) Now we get to level the playing field a bit, and I for one do not want to bet against American innovation.

Although again, this decision only affects government workers.  It doesn't affect the private sector at all.

Is this state or federal level?

Both.  That means not just federal government workers, but teachers, police/fire unions, etc..

Fully agree, but now that precedent has been set, how long will that be brought up to court?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.

This decision is very clear, and leaves zero wiggle room.  Any states or local governments that try to evade this or delay compliance will get slapped down hard and fast.  You may literally see some employees requesting tomorrow that union dues no longer be deducted from their paychecks.   Should take one payroll cycle at most.

In terms of the private sector, it won't affect anything.  Two completely separate legal analyses.

Right, but it goes beyond just the money paid to Democrats and their causes.  Bloated public sector unions keep lots of people on the payroll who basically function as professional agitators/protesters.  When you see those nutbag rallies, you can be pretty sure that there are a lot of hired union goons in there.

This is going to really hurt those unions in the pocketbook, and that means they won't be able to keep nearly as many of those people on the payroll.  Those bogus "grassroots" protests, particularly in cities, will lose a good chunk of their activists.

It's certainly one way to drain the swamp.

Ehh.... the goons'll just head over to the nearest Antifa headquarters and start getting paid by Soros.  I have detested Big Labor Unions for decades.  This is a huge victory, IMO.

Big, BIG win!
There is no way that this can be understated.

Mr. Gorsuch made the difference.
and...
...Mr. Trump picked Mr. Gorsuch.

Do you think any of the other Republican candidates other than Mr. Trump (with possibly the exception of Ted Cruz) would have picked and fought for "a Gorsuch"?

I doubt it. They would have caved to democrat-communist opposition and picked someone else.

You’re right. They have a history of shying away from a fight.

Not to make excuses for them but as way of explanation, republicans really do get beat up pretty badly by the media if they dare to offer up a conservative jurist.

Seems as though it could be particularly encouraging for the future of education.  Some potentially good candidates may have been reluctant to join the profession, due to the stranglehold the union had on it and the political activities to which the had to donate, despite their personal opposition.

I don't know, though.  Many die-hard conservative teachers join NEA because of the insurance and backing of the union if someone goes after you legally.

Yeah, remember all the judicial rulings Trump cited when Gorsuch was nominated and the arm twisting/log rolling he did to get him through the Senate?  Me neither.  Gorsuch was a good choice, because The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation did all the legwork, then McConnell nuke optioned his way through confirmation.  Nice embellishments, though.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.
