Buried on the battlefield in 1942, remains of WWII hero from Omaha could finally come home

    By Steve Liewer / / World-Herald staff writer Apr 10, 2017 0

Pvt. Hymie Epstein of Omaha died saving the lives of his fellow soldiers in Papua New Guinea’s malaria-infested jungles three-quarters of a century ago.

His body was hastily buried on the battlefield in December 1942 during some of World War II’s most hellish combat.

After his death at 22, the former football and swimming star at Omaha Technical High School was celebrated in his hometown, particularly among the city’s Jewish population.

I hope his remains are identified so they can be buried with his remaining family in attendance.
