Before President Donald Trump sits down with a notorious dictator, he will face what may well turn out to be a tougher crowd â€” some of America's oldest allies.

With his new tariffs increasing U.S. isolation, Trump heads to Canada on Friday for a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized nations. The White House is expecting a chilly reception from Canada and West European countries, already frustrated over Trump's withdrawal from the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel previewed the dynamics on Wednesday, telling the German parliament that "it is apparent that we have a serious problem with multilateral agreements here, and so there will be contentious discussions."

Well, then it's a good thing it's a business meeting and not a popularity contest.

The Euros value consensus above all, so if you deign to vary from whatever their orthodoxy of the moment happens to be, you'll be villified.

Honestly, I think the success of that meeting from a U.S. perspective will be how pissed off Merkel, Macron, and their ilk are after it is concluded.

I find it hard to believe that they will be any more pissed after the meeting than they were before. They know what Trump is doing. They know there's nothing they can do to change his mind. So I imagine that the other six will have plenty to talk about amongst themselves and the President will have plenty of time to watch Fox news. Waste two days he could be in Mar a Largo.

It's irrelevant. They would be pissed off no matter what. Or that is what we would be told. There is no way Trump wins so he might as well cash in on the loss.

I think he actually enjoys it, which really bugs them. Merkel, etc., have enough clout that they can look down their noses at the nations from Eastern Europe that are dissenting from some EU policies, and dismiss them as irrelevant. But they can't do that with us, and it frosts their gonads.
