“It’s haunting,†Scot Peterson said in a Washington Post report published Monday. “I’ve cut that day up a thousand ways with a million different what-if scenarios, but the bottom line is I was there to protect, and I lost 17.â€
The only 'what-if' here is what if you had done what you were paid to do.
It is similar to an airline pilot. A jet nearly flies itself with auto-pilot. But the reason they have a pilot AND a co-pilot on a plane is in the event that something goes wrong. Pilots make a lot of money just in case a bad event occurs, because it is their job to correct it and save the lives of the passengers.
Same with this sheriff. His daily duties were not demanding. The only reason the school paid him to be there was in the event that something went wrong. For month after month, he collected a paycheck because he was the one who was supposed to protect the students from some dangerous event.
Well, the event happened, and this guy checked out. It is beyond despicable. He fraudulently stole money from the school by pretending to be someone he was not. And this fraud led to the death of school kids. If he really has remorse, he would pay back every dime of salary he collected from that school.
