Tiananmen Square: 29 years after the crackdown
ABC News

This year marks the 29th anniversary of China’s violent suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

More than a generation later, this pivotal event in modern Chinese history still remains one of the most taboo subjects in China and one the Chinese Communist Party wishes could be forgotten to the pages of history.

Every year as June 4 approaches -- the date the military retook the square from pro-democracy protesters -- security is stepped up, journalists are barred from the vicinity and internet censors block any references to the incident.

May 4th, 1989, so they were essentially camped out there for a while (from the article).

A sea of student protesters gathers in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, on May 4, 1989.

Amazing how running people over with APCs can put down a good protest.
Fools mock, tongues wag, babies cry and goats bleat.

The "man standing before the tank" photo* has to be one of the great images from the twentieth century. A defining moment...

*Actually, I believe the photo is actually a still from video of the event. Doesn't matter.

I happened to be listening on my shortwave radio to Radio Beijing on the day it happened.  There was a very dramatic broadcast that I heard.  I found it here,  it was just as I remembered it.
