This is a red-letter day!  It took a grammatical error from one of the self-certified geniuses to get you guys to join me in a single opinion!  A great day to be an American.   888high58888

We have a lot of things we have agree on.

Let's keep this up, OK?

I'm from Ohio.

I learned not to get into discussions about THAT war long ago.

I can't believe we've had that many posts about grammar.  Oh, well, if it keeps us out of the pool hall.

Here's a grammatical error that I can forgive:

"To boldly go where no man has gone before."

The problem is a split infinitive.  Nowadays a split infinitive is not always regarded as a grammatical error (probably inasmuch as it has become so common), but at the very least, the split infinitive should be regarded as a style blunder.

"To go boldly" would be better than "to boldly go."

Yes, it is a split infinitive but so much more effective than 'to go boldly.'  Plus, everyone missed the main problem which was corrected in the later Star Trek spinoffs.  It is the word, 'man.'

But boldly is emphasized because it comes first, so I'm sure that was quite intentional.

My point, even as a stickler for grammar, is that some things should probably be left untouched.

(Note to self: when writing proper English, one does not begin a sentence with "but".  ^-^)

As a male of the species, I had no problem with "Man" in that quote.

"To boldly go" has a nice iambic quality, but I believe that with the right man (person?) doing the voice-over at the opening of the show, "To go boldly" would be pretty cool, too.   As with all fine literature, much depends on the fellow (human?) doing the reading aloud.

"If it was proven that the president used the powers of the United States government to cover-up his own criminality or to cover-up the way in which he cooperated with Moscow in order to win the presidency, that may or may not qualify as an ordinary federal crime, but it’s certainly an impeachable offense," Tribe told co-anchor Chris Cuomo.

Even if Trump personally paid the Russians to steal the DNC e-mails (highly unlikely, given that the e-mails were stolen during the Dem primary), and then fired Comey to keep the FBI from finding out, this would not be an impeachable offense that rises to the level of getting bipartisan support.  Neither, by the way, is paying off a porn star and failing to disclose it as a campaign expense.

This is why the whole Russia collusion thing is such a red herring.  Even if there was a "there" there (which there isn't), it would not be regarded as serious enough by Republicans to justify impeachment.  I don't know a single Republican who is predisposed to impeach Trump if it turns out that he or his campaign colluded with the Russians.  Through their foundation, Bill and Hillary collected something like $1.5 billion in favors from around the world in the run-up to the presidential election.  No Democrat seems alarmed about that.

The whole Russia-gate affair is being greeted with a giant yawn by everyone but die-hard Dems.

"Winston Tastes Good Like A Cigarette Should"

That's an easy one:  "as a cigarette should."

I have to confess that I have never cared much for the distinction between "as" and "like" in this case.  The logic for demanding "as" instead of "like" is pretty subtle, having more to do with syntax than grammar, it seems to me.

Yes, they did, which ruined the whole quote.  It sounded bland and unappealing.

I've always thought the use of the term 'man' in that sort of connection meant, or denoted, mankind.

It did, and it was decided it had to go, probably due to liberals screaming "What about women??."  I guess the changing of the quote was one small step for a man, but one giant leap backward for mankind.

I don't think I do either.  Sometimes I'm tortured trying to decide whether to use "Was" or "Were."

we were

Sometimes it's difficult to determine if the object is singular or plural.

    • I try my best ...
The past tense of see is saw. As in, 'I saw it.'
However this usage is in decline. Now, everyone I see on television is saying, 'I seen it.' I haven't heard anyone say, 'I saw it up on the hill.' in years. Everyone 'seen' it up on the hill.

"It has been seen." is correct.
"I seen it." is technically incorrect. However, these days it is in common use.

This used to irk me a little, but I have accepted that 'seen' is the new 'saw'. Languages change over time. This just happens to be one that happened in my lifetime.

The same with, 'Where are you at?' Everybody says this. Even though it is ridiculous. 'Where are you?' is better. So many people are adding an extra word simply to make the question grammatically incorrect. 'at' in this case adds nothing to what is being said. And yet, everyone adds it. I don't know why.

Since we are on the topic, what is with replacing words that begin with vowels with 'uh'. For example, you never have to be there immediately, you have to be there 'uh'mediately. There is never an emergency. There is only an 'uh'mergency. Even newscasters, people who are supposedly trained in language do this. It is perplexing. There is no experiment. There is only an 'exspearmint'.

Oh well, life too short to worry about things like this.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists.
