No, Kilauea won’t cause mass destruction

Kilauea isn’t about to become another Krakatoa. So let’s just stop that rumor right there.

Twitter was awash last weekend in indignant volcanologists responding to a now-corrected Associated Press story that appeared to link the Hawaii volcano to the so-called Ring of Fire, and suggest its eruption could spark others in the ring. That’s just wrong, for a number of reasons.

Kilauea is a shield volcano with runny lava, while it may occasionally spew ash and pumice, it is not an explosive volcano. Vesuvius, Krakatoa, and St. Helens are stratovolcanoes that have thick viscous lava that will plug the vents and cause pressure to build up so high the mountain explodes from gas/steam pressure buildup. That being said, shield volcanoes can have such large fast eruptions that the magma chamber empties and collapses into a caldera, but those are the so-called "super volcanoes". The Hawaiian volcanoes have not tended to behave that way

In the world of tropes, this is known as "Tempting Fate".
Let it burn.
