House rejects farm bill as conservatives revolt
By Juliegrace Brufke - 05/18/18 12:04 PM EDT

A five-year farm bill went down to defeat in the House on Friday in a stunning blow to GOP leaders brought about by conservative unrest about immigration.

In a 198-213 vote, GOP conservatives essentially joined Democrats in rejecting the measure, which would have introduced new requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program [SNAP] that were a priority for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus opposed the farm bill after leadership failed to deliver on their demand to hold a vote on a conservative-backed immigration bill crafted by Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) before the farm bill came to the floor.

Good!  About time they asserted themselves and stood up to Paul Ryan!

"We had enough members that were willing to vote for the farm bill, that liked the farm bill, but a small group that wanted to extract some direct pledge on immigration that we could not simply fulfill under their time frame," he said.

This is why people are fed up with Washington.  If the bill is bad, loaded with poison pills, or not supported by your constituency, vote it down.  Holding it hostage for another, unrelated legislative agenda item is really weak.

Thats how they get their pet projects passed and its really the only way bills get passed.   Vote for their pork or they'll vote against necessary bills.

Thoroughly!  And it's all driven by our current Marxist tax code!

But there is a small number of people with integrity there.  Not enough to vote it down.  However, they can do this kind of thing.  If people are fed up with Washington over this sort of action, it may be because they don't understand what is going on.

While this does encouraging conservatives stood up to a spending-binge GOP leadership, let us also remember that the Democrats went against farmers by voting no.

This might bite them later on.

House Conservatives have their own version of the Hastert Rule.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.

The increased work requirements for SNAP would have been a good thing, but the immigration issue is important.

It's also how we got earmarks, pork projects, bloated budgets, and uniparty problems.

Yes, those all came out of our Constitution.  It's up to The People to reign that back in, but we're lazy and fickle.

Mr. Ryan is learning the hard way the downside of being a "short-timer"

That was my thought. They have little to fear from a lame duck.

This Year's Farm Bill Is Everything Wrong With Washington

The Farm Bill Was Bad Policy, But That's Not Why the House Killed It

Basically, the farm bill sucked on its own demerits.

I think that kind of goes to my original point.  Had they gotten a solid promise on bringing the Goodlatte bill they would have passed an arguably bad bill with no guaranteed outcome on immigration.  Silliness.

Those damned conservatives killed another establishment bill.
They'll have to be ready for the next one:

In the wake of the House defeat, a different farm bill being crafted in the Senate will now be the center of attention. That bill is not riven by the same in-fighting that sank the House version—it is being prepared in a bipartisan fashion by the Senate Agriculture Committee—but that means it is unlikely to include any significant reforms to the subsidies, handouts, and corporate welfare that legislators and lobbysists have cultivated through the years.

Oh how sad, (sarcasm)
AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

The Farm Bill may have been okay but it's not as important to most of the country as our illegal immigration problem.

If holding up other bills, whatever merit they may have, to force Congress into getting serious about the immigration thing is what needs to be done, then do it.
Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.
