John McCain calls on Senate to reject CIA nominee Gina Haspel
Washington Examiner, May 9, 2018, Al Weaver

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called on the Senate to reject Gina Haspel's nomination to become CIA director Wednesday, charging that she was unable to address concerns with her role in the use of enhanced interrogation techniques during the Bush administration.

"Today, Gina Haspel testified before the Senate and to the country about her qualifications to lead the CIA. This occasion provided an opportunity to provide details about her experience in the CIA, explain her involvement in the so-called enhanced interrogation program during the Bush Administration, and account for the mistakes the country made in torturing detainees held in U.S. custody after the September 11th attacks," McCain said in a statement, referring to Haspel's confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee. "Unfortunately, the testimony the American people heard from Ms. Haspel today failed to address these concerns."  ...

"Her refusal to acknowledge torture’s immorality is disqualifying," he added. "I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination."

She's a career officer uniquely qualified to lead.  Dead Man Walking can STFU while the world keeps turning after his departure.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

In Vietnam they tortured people for fun.

The CIA used uncomfortable situations to get information. From people trying to destroy us.

Panties on the head are not the same as what Vietnam did.

Oh and Congress approved it

What you said! McCain has devolved into a petty venal vindictive man.

Don't fear the Reaper Johnny, just go. The Devils waiting for payment and he says your past due.

Does anybody actually hear McCain make these statements, or is second or even third hand from family, like the wife that would love to serve out his term?

But for his father and grandfather no one would have ever heard of John Sidney McCain III.  He knows that and it's haunted him every day of his life!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Well I call on Johnny to prove his wrinkled traitorous ass is still alive and coherent. All of this chatter from his camp the last month wreaks of Woodrow Wilson's last 2 years in office.

McCain is different from you and me.  He actually has a vote to use against her.  If he thinks this is that important, he can show us some of those famous guts he says got him through Hanoi, schlep his ass to DeeCee and cast it.

I'm pretty tired of having only 50% of my Senators.

Right there is the problem. All we get from this guy is subversive statements, but he has only one job to perform for his $174K plus graft/bribes a year and that is to vote yea or nah. Either show up and do your job and vote this broad down or go the Rochester away and let the country continue with it's business.

Graham to vote yes on Haspel, despite McCain's call for senators to vote no

By Daniella Diaz, CNN

Washington (CNN)South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham announced Thursday he would vote "yes" for Gina Haspel to be CIA director, bucking the request of one of his closest friends in Congress, Sen. John McCain, who opposes Haspel's nomination.

"I intend to support Gina Haspel to serve as the first female Director of the CIA," Graham said in his statement. "Ms. Haspel has rejected the interrogation policies of the past. She is fully committed to following the law that prevents future abuses. This law, among others, includes the Detainee Treatment Act which I helped author. Gina Haspel should be confirmed as soon as possible as we live in a time of continuing threats."

McCain released a statement Wednesday evening asking senators to vote against Haspel because of her involvement in the George W. Bush administration's interrogation program after 9/11. McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, cited her refusal in testimony to acknowledge "torture's immorality."

Yesterday, some hecklers disrupted the testimony and one who did it was Ray McGovern, ex-CIA officer, well, he retired from the CIA in 1990! So, quite a long time ago actually... to be discussing this. And heckling. I only find somewhat extreme or conspiratorial (usually nutty or Russian prop-type) sites to be covering Ray McGovern.

If there is a catchall thread on Haspel, please move to that area.

I thought Haspel did well, including the part where she said she knew Khalid Shiekh personally killed one American, I think a CIA agent in fact.

OK, I found this thread and moved it. It's easy to miss some subjects. Good for Graham.
