Can Shutting Down Online Hate Sites Curb Violence?

GoDaddy has pulled the plug on another online peddler of violence.

The popular internet registration service last week shut down altright.com, a website created by white nationalist leader Richard Spencer and popular with many in the so-called alt-right movement.

The takedown is the latest example of how companies like GoDaddy are increasingly responding to growing public pressure to clamp down on violent sites in the wake of the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last summer.

When will Black Lives Matter, La Raza, Black Panther, Louis Farrakhan and SPLC sites be taken down?

Nope it won't work any better than taking guns away from law abiding citizens will stop crime and murder.

Of course not. Nor will they take down porn sites. This is virtue signaling.

Can Shutting Down Online Hate Sites Curb Violence?

Sure it can.  Let's start by shutting down CNN.com, MSNBC.com, CBS.com, Democrat Underground.com and the litany of Democrat Activist groups whom the vast majority of crazed mass murdering psychopaths have been influenced by.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775

I think more free speech is almost always the answer.  But I don't believe private companies should be required to host speech they feel violates their TOS.  Altrighters need to start their own hosting companies.

Good post.

There is some outfit (websites) that are called "Gab" that the Britain First people got on. I don't mind what they say. If there are others with a stronger message, I would tune them out.

Facebook or twitter suspended Britain First but I think they got back on. They are British Nationalists.

Who gets to define "hate"?

With the plethora of microaggressions out there now, I'd be mighty cautious about any reduction in freedom of speech, and especially careful about what is called "hate" speech.

If I can be freely derided for simply being a straight, white, Christian, male, shouldn't similar standards apply to my speech about any hypothetical sexually deviate, non-white, non-Christian of indeterminate gender?

If so, then we're just talking speech, here, whether in good taste, polite, or otherwise, and the whole "hate" classification should be removed.

If not, there is an inherent bias in the system that reeks of the very thing it proposes to eliminate.

People will generally avoid that which offends them, but if issues cannot be discussed without throwing up the 'hate' flag and silencing opposing viewpoints, there will be no release of angst nor exchange of ideas, just a heavier weight on the social pressure cooker vent.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
