WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A senior White House official on Tuesday denied a New York Times report that said U.S. President Donald Trump had told France’s President Emmanuel Macron that he would be withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal.

“The president did not tell Macron those things,” the official said.

Administration officials began informing congressional leaders about Trump's plans Tuesday. One person briefed on the talks characterized the president's position as similar to his stance on the Trans-Pacific Partnership — that he would pull out but remain open to the possibility of renegotiating a better deal.

Excellent news!  I was afraid he was going to stay in it.  Glad to see he's doing the right thing and getting us out of this horrible agreement.

He had to. There's no way he could go credibly into talks with the Norks without taking a hardline on Iran.

After Netty exposed Iran's "secret" nuclear activities, there is no other option but to withdraw from the phony deal.

Trump announces withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, isolating him further from world
CNN, May 8, 2018

Washington (CNN) — President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is quitting the Iran nuclear deal, pitting him against the United States' closest allies and leaving the future of Tehran's nuclear ambitions in question.

"I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal," Trump said from the White House.

"It is clear to me that we cannot prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement," he said. "The Iran deal is defective at its core. If we do nothing we know exactly what will happen."

In announcing his decision, Trump will initiate new sanctions to go forward, crippling the touchstone agreement negotiated by his predecessor, according to a US official and a person familiar with the plan.

"The so-called Iran deal was supposed to protect the United States and our allies from the lunacy of an Iranian nuclear bomb, a weapon that will only endanger the survival of the Iranian regime," the President said. "In fact, the deal allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium and over time reach the brink of a nuclear breakout."

The President gave a strong, clear and compelling argument for withdrawal in his speech today.

US will reinstate sanctions on Iran and possibly sanction other assisting nations.  Oil was at $69.65 when remarks concluded.  Wonder where it closes today.

"In a few moments, I will sign a presidential memorandum to begin reinstating US nuclear sanctions on the Iranian regime. We will be instituting the highest level of economic sanction," Trump said.

Haven't NK and Iran been partners in nuclear weapon and missile development for quite awhile now? I think they have. So Iran already has the bomb in all likelihood. The horse has left the barn and Obama gave them billions in cash. Not that we shouldn't leave "the deal" but it is far too late now to actually stop them.

Yes, IMO the Iranians have been able to abide by the lousy deal with the Norks doing all the subcontracting and testing for them.  We know they've been working together, because of the Nork-designed Syrian facility taken out by Israel in 2007.

I liked Trump's line about "as a citizen I'm embarrassed by this deal".

The Iranians had previously threatened to begin enrichment to 20% within days, if the US withdrew from the deal.  It's their move now and any enrichment beyond the agreement levels show they were never really serious if only 1 out of 6 parties removes themselves.

Kudo's Mr. President, though I think you should have done it 16 months ago like you promised.

C'mon @corbe  I know it will be painful but can't you give Trump a little credit without a caveat?

You can do it.  Try hard.

Three years ago, Saudi Arabia was, like most of us, extremely unimpressed with the deal.  The talk was, they would purchase ready made nukes from Pakistan.  Right now, they're probably either being packed up in Islamabad for delivery or uncrated in Riyadh for potential deployment.

On Sunday, the Sunday Times of London reported that the Saudis have made the “strategic decision” to acquire nukes straight “off-the-shelf’ from Islamabad, American sources told the paper.

The aggressive move may suggest that President Obama failed in his mission to dissuade Riyadh’s concerns over a nuclear deal with Iran. One of the primary purposes of the Camp David summit for Gulf leaders was to try and ensure the Arab states that the United States would be able to stop Iran from building nukes.

  • WE are NOT ok!
Another one in the 'plus' column for President Trump!
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.
