Over the next 300 days, President Trump has given Secretary DeVos and the Department of Education a tall order. The staff of the department is to undertake a massive review of all regulatory and guidance documents related to K-12 education and rescind or rewrite those that interfere with the original mission of the Department. However it s a consistent order with much of what he has tasked other federal agencies to do.

It is too early to tell what the outcome of this review might be, but the intent appears to be consistent with campaign promises the President made to return education to local control and support school choice. He has also been an advocate for technical education programs. In the Order the President establishes the policy of the Executive Branch in relation to eduction to be "to protect and preserve State and local control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, and personnel of educational institutions, schools, and school systems, consistent with applicable law" . . .

A consummation devoutly to be wished, if it can be brought off.

(Of course, dismantling the Dept. of Education would be the most desirable consummation . . . )
