Alfie Evans' parents lose final battle, court mandates removal of life supportUPDATE: The European Court of Human Rights has refused to intervene in the case, noting that it rejected the family’s application as “inadmissible.â€It seems that Alfie Evans will face the same fate as Charlie Gard. The seriously ill toddler has been on life support since he began having seizures and caught a chest infection. While doctors initially predicted that he would not live past the new year, Alfie surprised them all, able to come off the ventilator. But another infection left him in a “semi-vegetative†state, and doctors at Alder Hey Hospital have ruled that treating Alfie is “futile.†While it is believed that Alfie has encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, his parents insist that he has received no specific diagnosis. Alfie’s parents refused to remove him from life support, setting off a series of court battles just like Charlie Gard’s case, and like Charlie, Alfie has repeatedly lost.According to Tom Evans, Alfie’s father, there are multiple hospitals outside of the United Kingdom willing to take Alfie in and treat him, as well as multiple air ambulance companies willing to transport him. But last week, Justice Anthony Hayden still ruled against Alfie and mandated that his life support be removed. The British Supreme Court has since heard Alfie’s case, and ruled that Alfie must die.Read more at: https://www.liveaction.org/news/alfie-evans-loses-his-final-battle-with-the-british-supreme-court/
... The last few hours of Alfie Evans story are vile. The precious little boy, who suffered from a mysterious brain condition, was removed from the ventilator at Alder Hey hospital in London. The hospital decreed that the boy’s life was no longer worth living and so he must die. The parents pleaded that there was still hope, and they wanted to take him to a hospital in Italy where further treatment was offered and available. In the end, the doctors at Alder Hey hospital won the right to kill little Alfie. On April 23rd, they begin the slow, painful process of his execution by removing him from life support. Alfie defied them again as he continued to breathe on his own, without assistance, for several hours. The doctors, perplexed by this, eventually agreed to give Alfie water but no food. Since they could not suffocate him by taking away his oxygen, they would starve him to death. While all this was going on, an air ambulance from Italy was outside the hospital ready to take Alfie, who was also granted Italian citizenship, to their country for treatment. A small army of police is stationed outside the boy’s room to prevent this from happening.Alfie’s parents were granted one final hearing with a judge, praying he would have a conscience and the human decency to let them put their sweet son on that helicopter and take him to a place, with open arms, willing to give him medical care. But sadly he showed them no mercy. Their request was denied. The boy must die. This is his “final chapter,†says the judge. This is pure evil. The hospital held this precious baby hostage against the will of his parents, and the courts barred the family from boarding a helicopter and leaving the country. This is kidnapping and murder. ...
