This whole crap about people being "owed" a "living wage"...being "owed" a college education...being "owed" a job is crap.

Those are things you go out and do on your own.  No one should ever expect to be owed those things....or anything they have in their lives.

You are right. "Owe" implies an obligation to pay or repay in return for something received.

(a convenient way to engineer populations) "Guaranteed job IF you take nights/weekends and the arduous hours no one else can take or wants to take." (ever notice these casinos they like to set up on reservations as jobs programs turn out to be 24/7 operations? Does anyone really gamble at 4 a.m. on a Saturday morning in the middle of nowhere?) "Guaranteed job IF it's the kind of job we want you to do." You cannot get any of those things on your own. Inherently, they belong to someone else: the employer. While it is true we are not owed those things, inevitably there will be those of us that will be denied them, for any number of reasons.

As is their right.  That employer doesn't guarantee you employment.  You have to be qualified for the job or ear the promotion to it.

In defense of the unemployed and underemployed, not all of them are lazy complainers.

Many have tremendous talent (musicians, mathematicians, scientists) that are simply not needed in the job market and haven't seen enough improvement to find work in their field. So their talents and skills get wasted in jobs they're not fit to do.

This kind of FDR-era guaranteed work program doesn't solve their problem.

Bernie will never tell you, but money for any government scheme always comes from the ordinary citizen.  Higher taxes from the taxpayer, higher prices for the consumer.    Somehow we average shlubs will pay.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the head if those employees in these guaranteed jobs will have to pay for their jobs through income or some other payroll taxes?  So they'll get their $15 an hour job, but have to pay maybe half that to the feds to finance the program.

The feds giveth and the feds taketh it away.

We used to joke about that when I was in the military. They would give us a paycheck and then take 20% in taxes. They joke was that we were paying our own salary. It was weird. The same with unemployment. They take back taxes from that too. So yes, if the government ever did this, they would give you money with their right hand, and then tell you to pay them back in their left hand.

BTW, if they ever did this inflation would jump. With all that cash floating around in the economy prices would adjust to follow. Market basket prices would adjust to demand. Eventually $15 would become the price of a six-pack or a pack of smokes. You wouldn't be 'middle class' as they say, until you are making $40-$100 an hour, and upper middle class would simply move to $100+ an hour.

Everything would just ratchet up equally. Poor people would still be poor, and rich people would still be rich. The only thing that would change are figures involved. We have seen this all throughout history, all over the world.
