President Trump filed for an extension on his 2017 tax return, the White House announced Tuesday.
"The president filed an extension for his 2017 tax return, as do many Americans with complex returns," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told NBC News Tuesday.
The White House announcement comes on the same day as the Internal Revenue Service filing deadline for personal returns. Under the law, taxpayers can get an automatic extension of time by filing the right forms with the IRS.
Trump has refused to release his tax returns, despite critics calling for him to do so. Trump has repeatedly said he cannot release his tax returns because he is under audit, however, the IRS has reportedly said the audit would not prevent him from disclosing his information.
