The state's junior senator, fellow Republican Ted Cruz, who faces a bruising battle for reelection against Democrat Beto O'Rourke, used a lot more words in his defense of Trump.

"Tonight, the United States responded to the atrocities of Bashar al-Assad. As the President said, it is in our national interest to deter the use of chemical weapons," Cruz said in his first tweet Friday night after missiles were launched.

Later, Cruz tweeted: "It is now absolutely crucial that any further military action we take in Syria remains focused on protecting the vital national security interests of our country. In addition to any military action that we may choose to take, we must also take action against Assad's financiers."
