WASHINGTON (AP) â€” A top fundraiser for President Donald Trump has resigned from the Republican National Committee following a report that he paid $1.6 million to a Playboy playmate he had an affair with.

Elliott Broidy told RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel Friday afternoon that he was resigning immediately, an RNC official familiar with the discussion said. The official requested anonymity to discuss a private phone call between McDaniel and Broidy.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen helped negotiate a non-disclosure agreement between Broidy and the model last year. The unidentified playmate elected to have an abortion after discovering she was pregnant.

Cohen strikes again.....

I don't know if any of you have dealt intimately with state politics but this pasty fat bastard looks like every GOP muckity muck in charge. It's like they clone them.

Yep,
We have two flavors here. The ones that look like this, always beet red, usually own a car lot or something like that...

..and the little old lady red hat society that treat local politics like a social club.

The only two groups usually that have time for playing local politics. The ones who want to milk it for profit or the ones who want it as a little club.

It goes for Republicans and Democrats.

I'll admit, I've not read the article. Did the woman in question accept the payout and sign an agreement?

This may be distasteful on many levels, but is it illegal?

The legality question around all these payouts is if was done by the campaign during an election cycle. It then could be considered a political expense and run afoul of campaign finance violations.

Swap out the names. If we found out Bill Clinton's campaign paid of Kathleen Willy to stay quiet about what happened during the election, we would be up in arms.

Kind of reinforces something I learned from many years of political activism (and turned me off to it)- Republicans are just as bad as Democrats, they just hide it better.

What was illegal (by US law) ... the transfer of funds?, the agreement?, the abortion? Certainly not a shining moment in American history, but again, I ask if any of this is illegal? And this is a serious question @Rivergirl

The answer is probably was illegal it was done by the campaign during an election cycle.

But I am not aware something like this has been tested in a court of law.

Appended- It looks to be a direct violation of 11 CFR 114.2(f). https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/11/114.2 Prohibitions on contributions, expenditures and electioneering communications.
