Trey Gowdy: Take this job and shove it

AllahpunditPosted at 11:21 am on April 6, 2018

I’m paraphrasing, but only a bit. When asked what he thinks the point of the Republican Party is after seven years of observing it from the inside, he says, “The goal is to win.” Period. He’s learned some hard lessons in Washington. But they’re the correct ones.

Another cutting line: “I have not figured out how to commercialize conservatism as some of my critics have.”

What has he accomplished in his time chairing oversight? I can’t think of anything significant.

He talked tough.

But he accomplished nothing. Not entirely his fault. He has 100% of Democrats against Law and Order, and he had 50% or more Republicans supporting the Dem position. It was an impossible job. It was a job that nobody in D.C. wanted to see succeed.

He is likely leaving from disgust and frustration, with the Republicans more than the Dems.

At 3:28 of the video I posted, Gowdy says "To the extent men judge themselves based on what they do for a living, I don't have a lot to show for the last seven years."  It's why he is leaving.  At 2:04 Gowdy recognizes he was ineffective.  He explains that as being one of 435 congressmen.  He says you have to present a message in a 30 second sound bite, or a tweet, or a bumper sticker.

Gowdy: 'I don't have a lot to show for the last seven years' in Congress
Quote
"We've convinced ourselves that we have to win, because the country will go to Hades in a handbasket if my team doesn't win," Gowdy said, later adding that the current state of the Republican Party is rooted simply in a desire to win.

Gowdy leaving, frustrated over not accomplishing much has precisely zero to do with Trump, except on this site.

During the remainder of his life, if he wants, Gowdy will get more money, as a direct result of his time in government.

True conservative Jim DeMint proved the appeal of that.

At the time both made decisions to run for elected office, they very likely knew the uside far exceeded any downside. Money.

Lamenting disappointment over few accomplishments, gives nice cover for their future earnings bonanzas.

You're right, it's kind of like when some people throw Cruz into a thread that has nothing to with him.

I was sad, too, until he started regaling us with his opus.  Now, not so much.  Only now are we finding out his heart wasn't in it, just his mouth.

He is likely leaving from disgust and frustration, with the Republicans more than the Dems.

Once men of principle figure out that the entire system is corrupted and rigged beyond any possible correction or redemption - it's easy to understand why they would quit.

A righteous cog trying to influence a gear shaft of corruption will not be permitted to grind the machine to a halt.

The whole deal at this point is a farce, played to perfection by those in power who understand how stupid and easily beguiled the American people are.
Fart for freedom, fart for liberty and fart proudly.  - Benjamin Franklin

...Obsta principiis—Nip the shoots of arbitrary power in the bud, is the only maxim which can ever preserve the liberties of any people. When the people give way, their deceivers, betrayers and destroyers press upon them so fast that there is no resisting afterwards. The nature of the encroachment upon [the] American constitution is such, as to grow every day more and more encroaching. Like a cancer, it eats faster and faster every hour." - John Adams, February 6, 1775
