Veteran Hollywood film director Steven Spielberg says the next star of one of his most iconic characters, Indiana Jones, should be played by a woman. Speaking to The Sun as his latest film Ready Player One hits the cinemas, Spielberg said that although it would risk anger from longtime fans of the Indiana Jones franchise, it is time the explorer took on “a different form.”

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan,” he said. “And there would be nothing wrong with that.”

Ford, 75, first played Indiana Jones in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark and reprised the role in three sequels, with the last being in 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It was announced last month that Spielberg will begin shooting the fifth, and as yet untitled, Indiana Jones movie in 2019. He also confirmed that this will be Harrison Ford’s last.

“This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that,” Spielberg said.

Feminist campaigners have also speculated about a woman taking on the role of the British spy franchise James Bond, although others have dismissed the idea.

Spielberg, who remains one of America’s most recognized and iconic film directors, also recently expressed his support for the anti-sexual harassment campaign Time’s Up, which was launched in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

“I think in 10 years’ time we’ll look back and realize what a watershed moment we are all experiencing together. 2017 to 2018, it’s extraordinary what’s happening right now,” the four-time Academy Award-winner said last month.

Spielberg has also become more politically active in the era of the Trump presidency, recently donating $500,000 to the student gun control movement March for Our Lives.

I don't think I'd enjoy watching ol' Bruce running around snake pits in his high heels or watching him kiss someone with his plastic surgeried, ugly face.......

Like it or not, most people would pay to see a hot young pair of knockers running around on screen in an adventure than someone in a wheelchair. It isn't about diversity, it is about $$$$. (Especially after the Crystal Skull flop I suspect the audience is ready to move on).

Well,maybe not INDIANA Jones,but why not his daughter,India Jones? Or Chrystal Jones,Sarah Jones,etc,etc,etc?

It ain't like there is any real fighting or shooting going on,people. It's a fantasy flick,not a documentary.

While I agree Ford's time with the franchise is probably done, you're assuming by "woman" they mean "hot young pair of knockers" when it could just as easily be Gabourey Sidibe or Chrissy Metz.

I'm pretty sure at this point that changing an iconic "white male" character to female, or black (or some other minority race/ethnicity), or alternatively sexual, or some other "category" isn't original anymore. We've had all-female Ghostbusters and a female Doctor for Doctor Who. At this point it's not original, it's cliché.

My first thought, and I thought look how well that Ghostbusters reeboot went! That was so bad with that reeboot, my brother helped make some of the equipment for the set and what they did with the new movie just left me saddened. And then I thought, go for it Steve and fund it all on your own, you have the cash do you really have the confidence?
