Saudi Arabia's crown prince affirmed Israel's right to exist and criticized former President Obama's Iran policy in an interview published Monday, pointedly bucking other leaders in the Arab world and signaling support for President Trump's Middle East agenda.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 32, told The Atlantic that both Israelis and Palestinians "have the right to have their own land" -- a surprising assertion given that many Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, do not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

“I believe that each people, anywhere, has a right to live in their peaceful nation," he said. "I believe the Palestinians and the Israelis have the right to have their own land.”

Prince Mohammed then took aim at Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

“Hitler didn’t do what the supreme leader [of Iran] is trying to do," the crown prince told The Atlantic. "Hitler tried to conquer Europe. This is bad. But the supreme leader is trying to conquer the world.

Asked about the Obama administration's nuclear deal with Iran -- which President Trump has long lambasted -- the crown prince sided with the current White House.

“President Obama believed that if he gave Iran opportunities to open up, it would change,” he said. “But with a regime based on this ideology, it will not open up soon. Sixty percent of the Iranian economy is controlled by the Revolutionary Guard. The economic benefits of the Iran nuclear deal are not going to the people.

Just one of the many positive changes brought about by the Trump administration. It goes to prove the world will always look to America for international leadership. When American leaders are weak, the world is a more dangerous place.

How is this because of Trump?  That's an official policy statement from a Crown Prince in the House of Saud.

Last time I checked they are not part of the United States or in any way influenced by or take policy advice from our Executive Branch.

by Thomas Lifson

Important history was made yesterday, and the tectonic plates of Middle East moved, as the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, explicitly acknowledged Israel's right to exist, in a homeland alongside a Palestinian state.  In a wide-ranging interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic:

Quote
He told me he recognizes the right of the Jewish people to have a nation-state of their own next to a Palestinian state; no Arab leader has ever acknowledged such a right.

Later in his account of his interview, Goldberg judges:

Quote
If Prince Mohammed actually achieves what he says he wants to achieve, the Middle East will be a changed place.

Yes, indeed.  "Revolutionary" is not too strong a word for what MbS, as he is widely known, has in mind.  And he is no starry-eyed idealist, but a pragmatist responding to the existential threat to his regime, and more broadly to Sunni Islam, posed by the Shiite mullahs of Iran, intent on developing a nuclear arsenal with which to hasten a final, cataclysmic Armageddon and a return of the Twelfth Imam, the Mahdi, who will usher in an era of peace under the world rule of (Shia) Islam.

For a host of pragmatic reasons, MbS and Saudi Arabia need Israel's help in countering Iran.  The old shibboleths of support for the Palestinians in their quest to drive the Jews into the sea no longer are useful.

How refreshing.

Agreed.  I imagine it will bring them a lot of grief among other Arab League members but IMHO the Saudis area beginning to realize the threat Iran poses to them and they see Israel as an ally to help keep the Mad Mullah's in check.  I did notice the Crown Prince also tossed the Palestinians a bone and said they need their own land too.

Perhaps the Saudis would be willing to offer them a chunk of land in the Southeastern part of the country.

The last time an Arab leader made peace with Israel, he was assassinated in his own country -- REMEMBER ANWAR SADAT.

I hope this Prince has a trustworthy food taster and faithful body guards.

I remember that.  I was getting ready for school and saw the first reports come in while I was watching GMA.

I agree with you...he better have a VERY good Personal Security Detail.

There is a practical side to this --- SAUDI ARABIA's FUTURE and its economy.

Saudi Arabia is planning to build a City by a Port. The name of the city is -- Neom.

See here: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-10-26/saudi-arabia-crown-prince-details-plans-for-new-city-transcript

Central to this is SECURING TRADE ROUTES.

The Prince realizes that with the USA fracking and pumping oil and natural gas, depending on oil alone for its economy does not make for a feasible future for his Kingdom.

Hence, he is planning a slow but sure shift from a pure oil-based economy to a trading economy ( see for instance -- Singapore ).

Central to this plan is a new trade route which will be used as an alternative to the Suez Canal through the ports of Neom, with a path to the Mediterranean Sea through Israel over land. Hence, this is a contingency plan to make the whole trade route redundant.

He is also wary of Iran and realizes that Israel acts as a deterrent to their fanatical Shiite Ayatollah's.

SA has been talking about their post-petro economy since the 1970s.

The crown prince is going further, than anybody in the past.

It appears he refers his nation be counted among the civilized western looking, not the rogues like Iran, NK, etc.

I hope he's up there in the line of succession...that region needs a national leader like him.

How is this because of Trump?

The President's been working with Saudi Arabia on a new approach to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.  Obviously, recognizing Israel's right to exist has to be part of this plan.

Despite furor over Jerusalem move, Saudis seen on board with U.S. peace efforts
Reuters, Dec 8, 2017

BEIRUT/RIYADH/AMMAN (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia pulled no punches when it condemned President Donald Trump’s move to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But Palestinian officials say Riyadh has also been working for weeks behind the scenes to press them to support a nascent U.S. peace plan.

But Arab officials privately say that Riyadh appears to be on board with a broader U.S. strategy for an Israeli-Palestinian peace plan still in its early phases of development.

Four Palestinian officials, who spoke on condition they not be named, said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas discussed in detail a grand bargain that Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and adviser, are expected to unveil in the first half of 2018.

One official said Prince Mohammed asked Abbas to show support for the U.S. administration’s peace efforts when the two met in Riyadh in November.

Another Palestinian official said Prince Mohammed told Abbas: “Be patient, you will hear good news. This peace process will go ahead.”

The U.S.-Saudi relationship has improved dramatically under Trump, partly because the leaders share a vision of confronting Riyadh’s arch-rival Iran more aggressively in the region.

Kushner, 36, whose father knew Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, has also nurtured strong personal ties with the 32-year-old crown prince as he asserts Saudi influence internationally and amasses power for himself at home.

I don't think a truce is a good description of his actions.

While he is bringing the Country more in line with the Western World, he is also removing power from their religious police and associated supporters.  That power is moving to the crown, himself.
