Trump: U.S. troops will be out of Syria 'very soon'
By Julia Manchester - 03/29/18 03:14 PM EDT

President Trump said on Thursday that the U.S. would be out of Syria "very soon" in the fight against ISIS.

"We're knocking the hell out of ISIS. We'll be coming out of Syria, like, very soon," President Trump said in an Ohio speech focused on infrastructure, referring to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terror group.

"Let the other people take care of it now. Very soon. Very soon, we're coming out. We're going to have a hundred percent of the caliphate, as they call it. Sometimes referred to as land, taking it all back. Quickly, quickly," he continued.

I was not for Trump during the primaries but I have to hand it to his supporters, it must feel good to defeat one of the greatest evils the world has seen since World War II.

Except ISIS was largely supported by our 'allies' Saudi Arabia to fight the spread of Iranian influence.  This is a no win situation.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

Depends, the Sunni/ISIS , as well as 9-11 are from Wahabi/Saudi.

I have to give it up to Trump, he goes there and the "reformation", of Saudi begins. We will have to see where that goes in the end.

Except, in the meantime, the defeat of Saudi funded ISIS only means the expansion of Iranian and Turkish influence in the area.  That's exactly what's occurring and it's not beneficial to us in any way.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

Just speculating, kibitzing, maybe the thought would be, we'd get our troops out of Syria, if the powers are going to go after Iran. But I doubt that, I would not, as of now, support any action against Iran.  That would be another piece of the puzzle falling into place... but I don't think that will happen.

Our Kurd allies, of course, deserve all the credit in the world, backed up with air-power from the US led coalition, mainly us with some assistance.  So, evil was defeated. I believe that. The SDF, Syrian Democratic Forces, our guys with mostly Kurds, conquered the ISIS capital, that being Raqqa in Syria itself. Maybe Mosul was the center of ISIS power in Iraq.

You can go on and on about ISIS, I'll buy the theory that a lot of Saddam's former henchmen formed it which is true somewhat. No, I don't buy that the Saudis helped out ISIS a lot, private donors may have and they are trying to change that. Yes, Saudis were in ISIS; so too, were people from many countries including the USA of all places.

To just blame Saudi Arabia is a bit of an Iranian talking point. Turkey looks pretty bad on this as well.

ISIS controlled most of central/northwest Iraq and Syria before Trump unleashed our dogs.

They are now a movement that pimply loners on the internet still believe in cult-like danger.   And, obviously, plotting in European capitals where feckless and craven politicians and populace seem to just LOVE to give away their freedom to despots.

Trump allowed our warriors to wage war against our enemies.  For the first time in eight years ...or so.

The little NeverTrump troll edpc doesn't get it ... he never will ... but Trump stamped out ISIS in around eight months when Obama dithered for eight years. Our specialists just obliterated around 200 of Putin's "Weber Specialists" when their firefight came too close to our boys.  We destroyed his mercenaries with prejudice.

Trump is FEARED in this world.  I like that.   Obama was loved, which meant America was getting screwed.

Tom, I can't upsize your avatar but that has to be the GREAT Marty Brodeur.

I'd put him ... second ... of all the goalies I've seen.  Hasek is first, he's second.

I always liked Brodeur because he was big and could handle guys running him.  He and Hasek were two of the bigger guys who could play that crazy position.  He had the agility, attitude and size.  And, he was tough as nails.  He took so many hits from those old Flyers thug teams it's amazing (if you think Lindros, LeClair, Otto et al were thugs).  You couldn't run Marty and intimidate him.  He did, however, carp a little more than I like to the refs.  He was INTO it, every game.

Hall of Famer, first ballot.

When we end up fighting the entire region in a conflict with Iran, because their Shiite militias are now the influential force there, we'll see who's clueless.

Whether Saudi Arabia was, is evil; has little to do with the accomplishment of defeating or maybe better said, rolling back ISIS; which surely there would not be if there were no 'liberation" of Iraq in 2003; what a total way to derail the conversation.

Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have said repeatedly that those troops will remain and the civilian presence will increase as the U.S. works to prevent a new terror group from forming.

But Trump's suggestion then that the U.S. could leave "very soon" seemed to catch spokespeople at the Pentagon and State Department off guard.

A Pentagon spokesperson referred questions about the president's comment to the White House. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said she was unaware of any new policy to withdraw U.S. forces.
