The gift that keeps on giving

A man in the UK has caught the world's "worst-ever" case of super-gonorrhoea.

He had a regular partner in the UK, but picked up the superbug after a sexual encounter with a woman in South East Asia.

Public Health England says it is the first time the infection cannot be cured with first choice antibiotics.

Health officials are now tracing any other sexual partners of the man, who has not been identified, in an attempt to contain the infection's spread.

He picked up the infection earlier in the year.

The main antibiotic treatment - a combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone - has failed to treat the disease.

Dr Gwenda Hughes, from Public Health England, said: "This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics."

Discussions with the World Health Organization and the European Centres for Disease Control agree this is a world first.

Thanks to antibiotics, the vast majority of sexually transmitted diseases are treatable. Gonorrhea, a bacterial infection that causes 78 million new cases per year (according to the World Health Organization), is one of them — or, historically, it was. But in recent years, doctors have been raising concerns about a rise in antibiotic-resistant cases of gonorrhea appearing in places like Japan.

We were on a tour in Asia. The medic had a presentation with pictures of what various venereal diseases would do to your junk. It was horrible. They got stuff over there that will rot your junk right off.


The story is that during the VietNam war, the VC/Chinese were developing super virulent forms of STDs. They would then infect the prostitutes so the American troops would catch it. I don't know if this is true. But if it is, it would an insane way to fight a war. That strategy couldn't help but to boomerang back on them. Maybe it has?
