At least 2 dead, dozen injured after ISIS-aligned gunman takes hostages in French supermarket
FOX News

A gunman who reportedly swore allegiance to ISIS has barricaded himself inside a supermarket in southern France, killing at least two people.

Local media reports at least 12 others are injured in the incident that French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said "seems to be a terrorist act."

"This is a serious situation," Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said.  ...

The gunman then took shelter inside the supermarket in Trebes and reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar!” which roughly translates to “God is Great!” in Arabic.

The suspect also reportedly said "he is ready to die for Syria" and demanded Salah Abdeslam be released from custody. Abdeslam is the lone surviving member of an ISIS terror cell behind the deadly 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people at a theatre, the national stadium and cafes. ...  More

... Police confirmed at least two people have been killed and a dozen more injured. Around 50 people fled the supermarket, but a police chief warned the casualty toll is likely to rise, saying: "We are unfortunately expecting to find more victims."

Shortly beforehand, a police officer jogging with colleagues in the city of Carcassonne, around a 15-minute drive from Trebes, was shot and injured. Local media reported that the two incidents are linked, but this has not been confirmed.  ...

How could this happen?  France has very strict gun control laws.

You have to have a license and go through a Physc evaluation to be permitted to buy a gun in France.

1 hostage taker is dead bringing total to 3 dead. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/gunman-takes-hostages-supermarket-trebes-france-n859416

Is there more than one hostage taker?

Hopefully, the ordeal is over. They had less of these terror incidences in the last year but one is sure to slip through.

A French policeman offered himself up as a hostage if the gunman let another go. Jeffrey Goldblum did that on a Law and Order Criminal Intent. That's the kind of thing one sees on crime tv shows. Probably did the same thing with Olivia on Special Victims Unit.

A French police officer who swapped himself for a hostage in a supermarket siege on Friday has died, officials say.

Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame, 45, "fell as a hero" and showed "exceptional courage", French President Emmanuel Macron said.

The gendarme helped bring an end to a gunman's shooting spree that killed three in southern France.

The radical Islamist gunman, 25-year-old Redouane Lakdim, was shot dead as police brought the siege to an end.

Announcing the police officer's death on Twitter, Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said: "He died for his country. France will never forget his heroism, his bravery, his sacrifice."  ...  BBC
