Trump congratulates Putin on winning presidential election
TASS, Mar 20, 2018

MOSCOW, March 20. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has congratulated his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on his win in the presidential election in a telephone call on Tuesday, the Kremlin press service reported.

Apart from that, according to the Kremlin press service, the two leaders discussed further contacts between the two countries and topical international issues.

The Kremlin noted that "in general, the conversation was constructive and businesslike and focused on overcoming the problems that have accumulated in Russian-US relations."

"The sides agreed to develop further bilateral contacts, including in the context of reshuffles in the US State Department. Special attention was focused on the issue of a possible top-level meeting," the Kremlin said.

The whole event seems to have caught his staff off guard.  Earlier in the day, the conversation either wasn’t anticipated or they didn’t want to discuss it.

Trump Has Not Called Putin To Congratulate Him And Is Not Planning To, Says White House

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel made customary calls to Putin but voiced their grievances with the Kremlin’s current domestic and foreign policies. President Donald Trump has not called and has no plans to do so at present, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told journalists Monday.

Obama calls to congratulate Putin after a win – that’s okay, it’s Obama.

Trump calls – that’s wrong! He must be up to something.

Yes, he was counseled not to do it, because of all the irregularities, etc.

I don't go along with this, but if this is customary, a head-of-state wins and congratulations are sent like it was sent to Macron of France, if it is custom, perhaps then, it is of no problem. We have to live in this world.  Now, if one can show, say GW Bush didn't send out such, I might look at it again.

Bush Congratulates Russian President-Elect
By Associated Press | March 5, 2008

WASHINGTON — President Bush has called Russia's new president-elect and has said he hopes to establish a close working relationship that will help them deal with important world issues.

Dmitry Medvedev, the hand-picked successor of Vladimir Putin, won Russia's presidential election with just over 70% of vote, according to final preliminary returns.

Medvedev is suppose to be very similar to electing Putin, from what I understand, crony, puppet, something like this.

Bush Congratulates Putin, Spanish Socialists on Election Victories - 2004-03-15

U.S. President George W. Bush has congratulated the victors in the Spanish and Russian elections.

Spain's election came in the wake of a terrorist attack in Madrid, and resulted in an upset victory for Socialist Party leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. He has been an opponent of the U.S.-led military operation in Iraq, and has spoken of withdrawing the 1,300 Spanish troops deployed there.

Obligatory 'Trump Mad' story in wake of leak........

A Stunning Leak Rattles Trump And His Aides

One of the most startling leaks — and stunning revelations — of this whole administration has left President Trump and his senior staff furious and rattled. The Washington Post reports in its lead story: "Trump did not follow specific warnings from his national security advisers [yesterday] when he congratulated ... Putin on his reelection — including a section in his briefing materials in all-capital letters stating 'DO NOT CONGRATULATE.'"

Why it matters: The speed and sensitivity of the leak prompted immediate finger-pointing within the administration, as aides reeled from a leak that could only have come from a small group of people, each of whom is trusted with sensitive national secrets.

Possible motives include concern about how Trump is handling Putin, frustration by the officials about Trump ignoring their advice, or internal power games.

@aligncare

It’s garbage for any U.S. president to congratulate a dictator on a sham election.  That’s not hard to follow, right?

Unless you believe Trump should use Obama as his guide?

@CatherineofAragon - welcome back.

It would seem they were hoping to have the whole episode go unnoticed, until Russia released word of the call.  Early on Monday, this statement was released:

President Donald Trump has not called and has no plans to do so at present, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told journalists Monday.

The fact he later did with notes makes the idea it was not planned a bit unbelievable, even if Trump is known to be impulsive.  Now, they’re dealing with the embarrassment that not only did he call, but he ignored the (either hasty or well prepared) material of his staff.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

It’s garbage for any U.S. president to congratulate a dictator on a sham election.

Is it also garbage for any U.S. president to work with a dictator against a common enemy --- say the Nazis or ISIS?

Is there ever a situation where any U.S. president needs the cooperation of a dictator to assist or even stand down as the US addresses a global threat --- say North Korea?

Is there ever a situation where the U.S. benefits from cluttering the lines of communication with a nuclear armed dictator with petty and over-inflated *feelings* of self righteousness?

Who can tell from this blathering and shifting mess?  I did my best to put them in chronological order, by topic.

”Russia is not helping us at all with North Korea,” Trump said during an Oval Office interview with Reuters. “What China is helping us with, Russia is denting. In other words, Russia is making up for some of what China is doing.”

@edpc, thank you!

Interesting.  This reminds me of the claims that his staff was blindsided when he announced he would seek tariffs.

And then rolling them back in again later. He is consistently inconsistent.

HANNITY: Why Didn't the Media BLAST OBAMA for Calling Putin?
posted by Hannity Staff - 3 hours ago

Sean Hannity called-out the mainstream media’s stunning hypocrisy Wednesday night; slamming the networks for their blatant double-standard in covering President Trump’s “congratulatory” phone call to Vladimir Putin.

“Back in 2012 President Barack Obama, he did the same thing congratulating Putin that now the media is excoriating President Trump for,” said Hannity. “You cannot make this stuff up. That’s how hypocritical the media, the left-wing in this country are.”  ...  More, including video, at link

Whatever you may think of Putin or Russia,  they are an important geopolitical player and it is appropriate for the U.S. President to offer his counterpart congratulations on his electoral victory.    It's called being diplomatic in the real world.

Trump has been right all along that;  if we can manage it, it is to our best interest to have better relations with Russia.   Not to kiss their arses,  but to try to move relations back onto a constructive path.   That is common sense.

I roll my eyes at my liberal friends and their feigned horror over Russia.   The same stupid liberals who mocked Romney when he identified Russia as our principle adversary.    Liberals have spent decades being soft as cupcakes on Russia;  I can't recall an authentic Democrat hawk since Scoop Jackson.    Now all these ginned-up demands to confront Russia, to insult Russia, to impose ricky-tick sanctions on Russia,  to wave the bloody shirt when no Dem of any salt ever raised a peep about Russia until Hillary Clinton - a true boob among boobs - lost an election.

Color me a complete cynic on this.  Mr. President, don't let the bastards grind you down.

If we have sent out congratulations to Xi of China, with that regime being accused of involvement of everything from organ-harvesting on prisoners to oppression of Christians and I assume, Xi was congratulated on his victory, that's a pretty low bar set already.
