At least six people were reportedly injured when a newly-built pedestrian bridge at Florida International University collapsed Thursday, leaving several vehicles trapped underneath the sprawling wreckage.

The structure, called the "Instant Bridge," collapsed just before 2 p.m.

Miami police were told Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had recovered six people with injuries, Fox News confirmed.

The bridge, projected to be finished in early 2019, was set to link the university’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, where an estimated 4,000 students live, according to the Miami Herald.

Several reportedly killed

Another example of competency problems in our society. People building this had state licenses for contracting, for engineering etc. The city/jurisdiction has inspectors.

Yet this happens? This shit happens in Zimbabwe and Russia, not in the USA.

Wonder how many illegals worked on the construction?

Concrete and wood frame work is almost always done by illegals.   Electricians, plumbing are usually done by Americans, at least here in Tampa.

The university called it a “one-of its-kind pedestrian bridge” that “swings” into place.

I suspect the "one of a kind" may hold for a long time.  The finished version was supposed to include suspension cables not yet installed.

Getting crushed by a huge slab of falling concrete has to be one of the more bad ways to go.

950 tons.  Likely even inside a car, it was quick.

A local college had illegals do some work on new dorms, mostly masonry. The "workers" proceeded to defecate into unconnected toilets. Who knows why they thought that made sense.

My FiL had a brick/block laying crew he was in charge of at Bay Masonry down there that had quite a few illegals.

Stupid name for a bridge, IMO.  Except that.... if you drive under it... one instant you're alive, next instant you're dead (and buried).

I can't imagine what the family of those trapped underneath are going through.

But I'm confused.  Projected to be finished next year?  Why was it already up and functioning (sort of) then?  It was just put in place this last weeked.  Right?

Judging from the level of the slab I'd say theres not going to be much left.    I feel for the people who have to recover the remains.

It was called instant because apparently it was assembled offsite and lifted into place.  At least the part which used to cross the highway.

Well, it's "finished" now.

That it is.  They just showed a PR pic of the guys that "did" the bridge on Fox.  All happy faces and smiles then.   I wonder .... can you sue city officials that put a defective bridge up?

I don't know a thing about "instant" bridges.  Is that a routine way to construct/install pedestrian bridges?  If so, perhaps they should rethink that.

The entire construction wasn't scheduled to be finished.  The pre-fabricated strut main-crossing was put in place but not open for use.

The collapse might have involved defective steel from Japan (Kobe Steel Co.) or Russia (Red October Steel Co.).
