Florida Prosecutors Seeking Death Penalty In School Shooting
« on: March 13, 2018, 06:53:20 pm »
MIAMI (AP) — The former student charged with killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month will face the death penalty, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, is scheduled for formal arraignment Wednesday on a 34-count indictment, including 17 first-degree murder charges. Cruz's attorneys have said he would plead guilty if the death penalty was not pursued in the Valentine's Day massacre.

The office of Broward County State Attorney Michael Satz filed the formal notice of its intentions Tuesday. The action by prosecutors Tuesday does not necessarily mean a plea deal will not be reached.

Why bother with a plea deal?  It's not like there's a lack of evidence.

MIAMI (AP) - Florida prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz in the fatal shooting of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The office of Broward County State Attorney Michael Satz filed the formal notice Tuesday. The 19-year-old Cruz is scheduled for formal arraignment Wednesday on a 34-count indictment, including 17 first-degree murder charges.

Cruz's attorneys have said he would plead guilty if the death penalty was not pursued in the Valentine's Day massacre. The action by prosecutors Tuesday does not necessarily mean a plea deal will not be reached.

The only other penalty option for Cruz is life in prison with no possibility of parole.

I can't see why the prosecutors would agree to a plea that allows this creep Cruz to live out his life in prison.

They "got the goods" on him, cold turkey.
I believe that they even have a legal confession that will hold up in court.

Make him stand trial, find him guilty, and give him the death penalty.

Does Florida still use old sparky or have they gone to lethal injection?

The condemned can choose between either, though injection is the standard method.  It was last used in January 2016, when Wayne Doty opted for it.

Why bother with a plea deal?  It's not like there's a lack of evidence.

Two reasons IMO...1) the defense will agree to plead guilty by reason of mental defect...plenty of evidence to show he's mentally unstable and not accountable for his actions...2) save the state the cost of a jury trial.

Personally...I hope the DA rejects any offers of a plea deal and the kid gets the needle.
