BREAKING: White House Hits the Brakes on Tariffs
by  Erick Erickson
58 mins
-edited

Everyone woke up thinking the tariffs would be a done deal. Now it appears they may not happen or might be scaled back.

After massive outraged expressed by both congressional Republicans and business leaders, President Trump is suddenly getting cold feet on tariffs. A White House source says the President has asked the trade team to slow down and re-examine the impact. Nothing will be made final today. Kristen Welker of NBC News notes that any Presidential proclamation today will be largely symbolic.   ...  Rest of article

US stocks move higher as investors await tariffs update
Mamta Badkar 15 minutes ago

The S&P 500 was up 0.3 per cent to 2,733.62, led by gains in technology and healthcare sectors. Meanwhile, Treasuries were mixed while the US dollar was modestly higher.

Fears of a trade war have eased after the White House signalled on Wednesday that Canada, Mexico and other countries may be carved out from forthcoming tariffs on steel and aluminium imports for national security reasons. News that the president had planned sweeping tariffs had raised concerns about retaliation by other countries and the impact it could have on the US economy, and prompted the exit of Mr Trump’s chief economic adviser Gary Cohn, who was widely considered to be pro-market and pro-trade.

Despite lingering confusion about the timing of such an announcement Mr Trump hinted that news may be coming, tweeting: “Looking forward to 3:30 P.M. meeting today at the White House. We have to protect & build our Steel and Aluminum Industries while at the same time showing great flexibility and co-operation toward those that are real friends and treat us fairly on both trade and the military.”    ...FT.com

Trump hints at Thursday afternoon tariff announcement
The Hill

President Trump hinted in a tweet early Thursday that he will take action later in the day to impose steep tariffs on steel and aluminum.

"Looking forward to 3:30 P.M. meeting today at the White House," Trump tweeted. "We have to protect & build our Steel and Aluminum Industries."

The president also suggested the tariffs will include exemptions for countries he called "real friends" that "treat us fairly on both trade and the military."

Trump's tweet came amid confusion about his impending announcement of tariffs.   ...   The Hill via MSN

Republicans urge Trump to torpedo tariffs
by Evan Wilt
Posted 3/08/18, 10:08 am

WASHINGTON—A group of 107 House Republicans signed a letter Wednesday urging President Donald Trump to reconsider his planned tariffs on steel and aluminum.

House Ways and Means Committee chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, and Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade chairman Dave Reichert, R-Wash., organized the opposition document requesting Trump target the tariffs at bad actors and not harm all U.S. trading partners.

â€œWe are writing to express deep concern about the prospect of broad, global tariffs on aluminum and steel imports,” the letter says. “We urge you to reconsider the idea of broad tariffs to avoid unintended negative consequences to the U.S. economy and its workers.”   ...  More

Everything in politics is about the money. If you want to know why there were over 100 Republican members of Congress against it and an ultimate pullback on the language, look no further than big political donors.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a pretty reliable conservative, was on Facebook urging the president to reconsider tariffs.

Governor Scott Walker

Despite good intentions, the @POTUS proposed tariffs could put places like Bemis Co. and its 5,000 Wisconsin workers at risk. That’s why I am respectfully asking him to reconsider.

Proud to stop and support Seneca Foods in Janesville, yet another Wisconsin employer that will be affected by the tariffs. We cannot put these good-paying, family-supporting jobs at risk.

Please Briefers .. if you're not going to read The Art of the Deal, then at least listen to the President directly, unfiltered.  Just today he said tariffs remain an option determined by the outcome of the renegotiations under way --- "we'll see what happens".

This was and is a bargaining chip.  If the negotiations do not end with a level playing field for the American worker --- in spite of a letter from our esteemed Congress --- the President will impose the tariffs.  The media may not understand this, Congress may not understand this, but those sitting across the bargaining table do.

All this angst and finger-pointing and jumping on the President and "Trumpers" is unnecessary.

Both his Commerce Secretary (Wilbur Ross) and his head of the National Trade Council (Navarro) said there would be no exemptions to the tariffs.  Now there's word from the White House that there will be exemptions.  If Trump and his "Trumpers" don't want "angst and finger-pointing and jumping on the President", perhaps they should get their act together and have a coherent and consistent message.

If this is 12-dimensional chess that we mere mortals are too stupid to understand, I think they should simply ignore our "angst and finger-pointing and jumping on the President".  After all, they are apparently smarter than the rest of us.   Who cares what people who don't play 12-dimensional chess say?   *****rollingeyes*****

So now the trump fans are saying it was a piece of genius and 12D chess?  :nono:

He once again put his foot in his mouth and started shouting out stuff he didn't really understand.

Then when the whole of america apart from steel workers and trump lap dogs have said its a bad idea, he has started to clearly back track. His people have resigned therefore its pretty clear he was serious. this isn't some kind of genius at work here people.

Hey, you're too new here @Stevensr123 to ridicule anyone's posts and opinions...including mine.  I have said from the start this is a negotiation tool ... but perhaps it got lost in the hysteria from the NTs.  I've always cautioned the NTs to let this play out .... and now this caution extends to you.

The best Trumpsplaining is done in the video above from Meet the Press this past Sunday. It is 1 min 30 secs of high comedy and ridiculousness. Chuck Todd could not help but laugh at Wilbur Ross in the exchange.

Why should we expect anything different? It was the same approach he used with immigration and gun laws.  Policy development through release of public trial balloon.
