The city of Sanford, along with seven other Florida communities, were just ranked among the 100 most dangerous cities in the nation.

According to a new report from Neighborhood Scout that ranked the country's top 100 most dangerous cities, which looked at the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents as well as property damage, Sanford came in at a ranking of 97 out of 100.

"With a crime rate of 57 per one thousand residents, Sanford has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 17. Within Florida, more than 93 percent of the communities have a lower crime rate than Sanford," reads the report.    ...

Police and other emergency services in Florida are responding to reports of a shooting outside the Seminole Towne Center in Sanford, local officials say. The mall is on lockdown but there is no indication of an active shooter.


The incident happened just after 8 p.m. ET on Monday when officers were called to reports of shots being fired in the parking lot of the mall, outside the Burlington clothing store.

Details about the specific circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available, but the Sanford Police Department confirmed that there are “injuries.” It provided no information about the number of injured or their conditions.

Seminole Towne Center, which opened in 1995, is located off Interstate 4 in west Sanford, some 18 miles northeast of Orlando. It is home to about 120 stores.

I used to live less than 5 miles from this mall in a brand new subdivision, and I'm still not all that far from it, probably 15 miles.  It's not really in the downtown area of Sanford that locals would consider the unsafe area.  This area has grown quite a lot recently with what I think are moderately priced apartments and lots of national chain restaurants like Longhorn, Carrabbas, etc.
