Shocked GOP senators pan Trump's tariff announcement
by Al Weaver | Mar 1, 2018, 4:07 PM

Senate Republicans were highly critical of President Trump Thursday after he blindsided them with his plan to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum products and urged him to reconsider his plan.

The move was met with near-universal surprise from GOP lawmakers who were taken aback by the suddenness of the White House's decision. Most GOP senators view the move as a tax hike on American families and expect it to specifically harm agriculture.

"It kind of came as a surprise to most of us," said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., the third-ranking Senate Republican. "There is no standard operating practice with this administration. Every day is a new adventure for us."

"There's always retaliation, and typically a lot of these countries single out agriculture when they do that," Thune said. "We're very concerned."

Not sure where this is all going. But it seems to me that we hold the high ground in any trade war.

That is, seeing as we pay them a lot more than they pay us....... who has more to lose?

We have more to lose because we've sent so many manufacturing jobs overseas we have to buy from foreign suppliers.

And they will make us pay dearly.

Hope you enjoyed that tax cuts while it lasted.

That turned out to be full of errors, due to the rush job.  They’re trying to correct it and hope nobody notices.

Whatever extra money we thought we were gonna get from the tax cuts will be eaten up by higher gas taxes and higher prices for anything that has steel or aluminum in them.

You don't think the manufacturer is going to eat the increased cost on their end do you?

I'm not reaching...I'm just being realistic.

How, by making their goods even more expensive?  The Capitalist in me is simply thrilled by that.

You know, this Simple Bricklayer has never been hired by a Chinaman. I would not mind paying $10.00 for a shirt that china used to send here for $4.95. If that means an American has a good paying job, instead of foodstamps and section 8...another way we pay.

Not a thing they make that we cannot. Whereas, many of our exports are agricultural. China and Japan are not going to "manufacture" more food. Maybe we make them pay ...Eh?

As for the socialist countries of western Europe. They need our oil and LNG far more than we need a BMW.

@Fantom

You mock the socialist countries, yet you then applaud when our government artificially raises the cost of living on us.  I'm glad a Simple Bricklayer makes enough to throw away money on artificially high prices, but if you have that much, you could have been buying expensive American stuff already -- you didn't need Big Government to step in and force you to do so.  Heck, you could be passing out cash to those unemployed workers if you truly had cared.

Instead, you want government to step in and do a wealth transfer at the muzzle of a gun, giving money from the American consumer to Big Business and union bosses and those unwilling to switch to sectors with employment.

And what happens when you give handouts to someone or something without any standard required?  Do they improve?  No...they lay back on these artificial handouts.  That's what HURTS America, not helps it.

But go ahead and cheer Affirmative Action for uncompetitive industry.  I, for one, am against it.

Well, now..... Big Business and union bosses.... you doth protest to much..... methinks.

Seems it is American workers who will be the winners. It does not follow they will be Union. Although , FYI.. I was President of my local for over a decade. Other than being trained in Union organizing, really just a glorified gavel banger was I.

It is not a handout to insist that foreign workers are not subsidized by their governmnet. If they are then I would expect an American President to step in and protect our People , just as if the had been attacked on 9-11, there is a reason it is called a trade war.

You would have your American brother laid low...so long as you could profit by cheap/foreign subsidized goods .

A pity, and your shame.

Personally, I Thank Trump for not spreading Amercas cheeks.... fair trade my friend, on an equal footing.

Steel and aluminum tariffs are not going to help American workers.  The tariff is a tax on every manufacturer that uses these metals to manufacture in the USA.  That includes automobiles, aircraft, home appliances and many other goods.  So while it may help steel workers, it harms auto workers and assembly workers, and there are many more of them.  GWB did this several years back and had to reverse the decision because it backfired, just as this will.

This is an election year ploy to appeal to the industrial midwest, but anyone with any sense will understand that it harms many more workers than it helps.

WAIT just a minute... YOU'RE the one who's wanting to damage American business!  You're the one trying to drive the price of their raw materials up so American-manufactured goods are more costly (i.e., uncompetitive).

I'm the pro-American worker/consumer here.

Figures you'd be against American workers/consumers and pro-union-bosses.

@massadvj

A reasoned consideration massadvj. Dubya backtracked because he had no stones.

Having said that.

Here is a look at the price of steel https://www.focus-economics.com/commodities/base-metals/steel-usa
Currently at about $700.00 a metric ton or 2200 #.. more ore less. A 25% tariff would add ,once for once,  ^-^ less than $300.00 to the price of an average car.

I think that is not such a great sacrifice... to stop foreign countries from dumping steel on us.

Do you?  Fair trade, my friend.
