Trump asks lawmakers to put gun control measures in 'one terrific bill'
by Steven Nelson | Feb 28, 2018, 3:50 PM

President Trump told a bipartisan group of lawmakers Wednesday that he would like them to work together on "a very bipartisan bill" that includes a range of proposals that can all pass at once.

"We're going to all sit around, we're going to come up with some ideas," Trump told 10 Republicans and seven Democrats at the White House. "Hopefully we could put those ideas in a very bipartisan bill. It would be so beautiful to have one bill everyone can support instead of 15 bills, everybody has their own bill."

Trump added that, "we don't want to wait two weeks, three weeks, four weeks and people sort of forget and then we go back on and have another problem."

Before asking his guests to offer their ideas, Trump floated arming teachers, strengthening background checks, and preventing the mentally ill from buying guns. Later in the event, he mentioned raising the national age from 18 to 21 for buying AR-15-style rifles.

"I would give very serious thought to it," Trump said about the age to buy an AR-15. He previously endorsed raising the age without reservation. "A lot of people are afraid of that issue, raising the age," he said, making specific mention of the National Rifle Association's opposition.

Trump pressed his call for a single bill multiple times. He told Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, that he would like a bill sponsored by Cornyn, the Fix NICS act, which aims to improve background check reporting, to be expanded into comprehensive gun-control legislation.

Cornyn said any bill that can get the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate could be considered.

Trump said he felt gun-control legislation might have a better chance passing because than under previous presidents.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., told Trump gun-control legislation could pass under his leadership because under Obama gun owners feared any reform would open the door to further action.

At one point during the discussion, Trump suggested that authorities should ignore the law if they believe a gun-owner is dangerous.

"They should have taken them away anyways whether they had the right or not," Trump said of police who dealt with Nikolas Cruz, the suspected gunman who killed 17 people this month at a Parkland, Fla., school.

Federal Law

Under 18 U.S.C. § 922(d), it is unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person “has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to any mental institution.”

Again they're floating ideas for laws that are already in place just to "do something" so they can feel good about themselves and in reality end up doing nothing to prevent the next mass shooting.

Now that he's out of the Miss USA and Miss Universe business, maybe he can have a pageant for all these beautiful bills he's always signing.

I must be getting numb to it all.

Normally a line like
Quote
"They should have taken them away anyways whether they had the right or not," Trump said of police who dealt with Nikolas Cruz, the suspected gunman who killed 17 people this month at a Parkland, Fla., school.
would get a rise out of me.  Today I'm like, it is not my job to protect the people from the consequences of their political choices.

The Swamp Republicans are going to try and dance with these hyperventilating liberal drama queens, and are going to end up losing most of their base if they pass this bill. If they screw this up, I guarantee that I'll be walking away from the DC GOP from here on out.
The Republic is lost.

It's easy to float ideas when they're sh*t.

"Mentally ill".

....to be defined by the government.  On the surface, seems appropriate.

But consider that the government's definition of mental illness will include anyone that was ever administered an anxiety drug or taken anything to treat 'Depression'.

For example...you lose a loved one?   Better tough it out.  Don't even think of calling a doctor...so be sure to tell your children to mind their own business.

If they pass some kind of nationwide measure to have a gun seizure and evaluation period, you can expect a visit from the law if some 'concerned' citizen or neighbor sees your MAGA apparel or bumper sticker.

Exactly. Liberals will have a heyday with this.

Further, he wants to limit magazine capacity and Rubio is jumping on board with this stating that the shooter had to reload and in that time frame, lives were saved.  IMHO, this isn't looking good folks and companies are now walking away from supporting the NRA.

I say no to banning bump stocks.  No to banning assault weapons. No to limiting magazine size.  No to raising the age to 21.

The 2nd amendment shall NOT be infringed!
