So we just have to accept that our kids will be shot at school.
We don't, at all. But gun control laws won't ever stop it.
America does not have a "gun problem".
We do have a cultural problem, characterized by moral and ethical failures, and rooted in the purposeful destruction of the family unit and the corruption of voluntary social institutions, including churches and synagogues, public schools and universities, civic organizations, charities, trade organizations and professional groups.
This effort has been perpetrated by Progressives who have intentionally attacked all of these institutions in order to promote their replacement by the State.
We have a mental health problem, too. The Progressives who dominate the culture and our schools have attempted to redefine fundamental truths about nature and human existence, confusing what is real with dangerous fantasies and illusions that sometimes have harmful social effects; for example, convincing people who might suffer from such illusions that they are actually "normal" and preventing them from getting the help they need (see: the "mainstreaming" of mental illness).
We have a crisis of faith in America. Traditional religious beliefs are under more of less continuous assault by the Left, and behavior that used to be constrained voluntarily by the faithful is increasingly unrestrained and practiced repeatedly, without fear or shame.
Finally, we have a law enforcement problem, which in the most recent tragedy turns out to have been a proximate cause of disaster, aside from the crazed gunman himself. Government institutions have been as badly corrupted and diverted from their missions and purposes as any other social institution in recent years.
Whenever local law enforcement authorities find their hands tied by misguided "political correctness", and whenever our national intelligence and investigative agencies have their focus shunted away from safety and security matters and toward political matters, the safety of all citizens suffers.
There are 80 million AR-15's in circulation - 99.9999% of which will never be used in a crime.
Our children should be safe in our public schools, and they deserve to be. But the immediate need is better and more predictive law enforcement, and better site security processes and procedures, including armed guards, where appropriate.
The longer term and more pressing need, though, is for a healthier and saner culture.
