Most online merchants already apply sales taxes, of the states where they have facilities.

I hope he doesn't mean an additional federal sales tax.

.....hmm... I was wondering the same things and I believe he has brought up raising the sales tax (I believe the gas tax); which would likely be a wash with any increase in wages.

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

If we are to have an online sales tax, it should be calculated as follows:

Each state to publish the tax percentage for origination and another (possibly the same) for receiving.  The sales tax applied shall be the average of the two.  The origination tax rate comes from where the product is being shipped from, and the receiving is where the product is being delivered.  The tax collected is divided in to two equal payments and remitted to the appropriate state.

Sales tax is destination-based, not source-based.
