Where does a 19 year-old high school dropout get that kind of disposable income? I'm assuming a cost of about $400-500 per rifle, and AR's cost a hell of a lot more than that. And then, he would have had to fill out a Firearms Transaction Record Form 4473 for each one, without raising any red flags?

 
I didn't keep track, but I would not be surprised if twice that many might move through me in any given year, second hand, and w/o paperwork.

Why is such a number significant? What is it supposed to indicate?

All indications is that it was a gun locker and not a gun safe. There is a huge difference with lockers not much more secures than a gym locker. That said, the guardians of this kid be it one gun or 10 were stupid as hell, and should share in the accountability. They knew he was a troubled teen and why he was not allowed back in school.

Interview of the family who took him in, said today he had numerous rifles and they bought a rifle case and they were locked up and he, the husband, thought he had the only key.
