Bitterly cold air from Siberia is poised to rip through Britain when bone-chilling easterly winds sweep across the country.

A split has taken place in the Arctic air mass, called a Polar vortex, and this will allow the icy easterly blast to move in next week. The last Big Freeze called by a Polar vortex weather event to hit Devon was in 2010.

Daytime temperatures could stay below zero as the freezing winds blow in from the continent. There is a risk of snow in the east but most areas will stay dry and bright.
