Safe, happy and free: does Finland have all the answers?

In the first of our new series, The Upside, we look at how the country went from famine to topping nearly every global social ranking.

Western Europe’s last naturally caused famine ended 150 years ago this winter. In a poor and backward part of the Russian empire called Finland, more than a quarter of a million people – nearly 10% of the population – starved to death.

Last year, on the centenary of its independence, Finland was ranked, by assorted international indices, the most stable, the safest and the best-governed country in the world. It was also the third wealthiest, the third least corrupt, the second most socially progressive and the third most socially just.

Finland’s judicial system is the most independent in the world, its police the most trusted, its banks the soundest, its companies the second most ethical, its elections the second freest, and its citizens enjoy the highest levels of personal freedom, choice and wellbeing.

The Nordic country’s 5.5 million inhabitants are also the third most gender-equal in the world and have the fifth lowest income inequality. Their babies are the least underweight, their kids feel the most secure, and their teens perform the second best at reading (only third at science, though).

In a century and a half, they seem to have done rather well. And so, as the Guardian embarks on a new series investigating the things that are going right in the world, it feels natural to start in Helsinki.

Happy because the unhappy people are encouraged to die?

It's not "encouraged" so much as "allowed the right".

But that's not the point of the study.  It's talking about "envy".

Finland is 99% white so it is hardly a bastion of Diversity and Diversity is our strength.

FINLAND

I am very fond of the Finns, a most pragmatic, redoubtable people with a Sahara-dry sense of humour. But would I want to live in Finland? In summer, you'll be plagued by mosquitos, in winter, you'll freeze – that's assuming no one shoots you, or you don't shoot yourself. Finland ranks third in global gun ownership behind only America and Yemen; has the highest murder rate in western Europe, double that of the UK; and by far the highest suicide rate in the Nordic countries.

The Finns are epic Friday-night bingers and alcohol is now the leading cause of death for Finnish men. "At some point in the evening around 11.30pm, people start behaving aggressively, throwing punches, wrestling," Heikki Aittokoski, foreign editor of Helsingin Sanomat, told me. "The next day, people laugh about it. In the US, they'd have an intervention."

With its tarnished crown jewel, Nokia, devoured by Microsoft, Finland's hitherto robust economy is more dependent than ever on selling paper – mostly I was told, to Russian porn barons. Luckily, judging by a recent journey I took with my eldest son the length of the country by train, the place appears to be 99% trees. The view was a bit samey....

Also, very standoffish compared to USA.

Ole and his brother Sven grabbed their poles and headed out to do some ice fishing. As they were augering a hole in the ice they heard a loud voice from above say, "There's no fish under the ice."

Ole an Sven moved about 25 feet over and started to make another hole. The voice said a little stronger, "There's no fish under the ice."

They both looked around and then looked up.

Ole said, "Are you God?"

The voice spoke back, "No, the ice rink attendant."
"I'm a man, but I changed, because I had to. Oh well."

Fins are fantastic Formula 1 race car drivers. And great rally car drivers, too.

Lars asked Ole, "Do ya know da difference between a Finn and a canoe?"

"No, I don't," said Ole.

"A canoe will sometimes tip," explained Lars.

Finns are not of typical Nordic extraction like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, or Iceland. They're mostly of Turkic extraction like Estonians. So no Lars, Svens, or Oles.  Unless one or two slipped across the border and are masquerading as Finns.

Have to correct myself. Some people who study those sorts of things think Finns and Estonians belong to the Turkic family, but a number of others disagree.  But they're not of the Scandinavian family.

Another correction. It appears about 5% of Finns are Swedes who have indeed slipped across the border. So there are some Oles, Svens, and Lars in Finland.

topping nearly every global social ranking.

Global social rankings. Well then. Can't argue with that.

As far as I can see they are all Socialist filth. There is nothing I would want to replicate from these backwards morons and degenerate alcoholics.
