NeverTrump Rallies to Defend Deep State, Dismiss Memo

Ostensibly conservative NeverTrump news media figures scorned Friday’s release of a declassified House Intelligence Committee memo detailing alleged abuse by senior FBI and Justice Department officials.

The memo claims that in obtaining warrants to spy on an associate of Donald Trump under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the FBI relied on the “Steele dossier” — an unverified document put together by opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which was funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

The author of the piece seems to have a funny notion of what constitutes the Never-Trump wing of conservatism.  I'd say National Review is solidly in that category, and their responses to the memo -- even David French's, which was by far the most dismissive of its content -- hardly constitute a defense of the deep state.

I think it's way too early to be dismissing this, as if this memo is the last word.  It isn't, it's merely the first.  I would remind you it took many months of public hearings and private investigations to ferret out what really happened with Nixon, it seemed like a nothing-burger at first too.  I wouldn't go around defining the relative magnitude of the different scandals just yet.  Could this be nothing or very little?  Sure.  Could it be "bigger than Watergate?"  I wouldn't rule that out either just yet.

The only thing that seems apparent is both involved meddling with a Presidential election.  The only question is, to what extent?
