Pennsylvania’s congressional map, drawn and approved by a Republican-controlled Legislature and a GOP governor, is illegally gerrymandered and must be redrawn, according to a ruling by the Democratic-majority state Supreme Court.

The 5-2 order, issued Monday, says the state’s 2011 map “plainly and palpably violates” the state constitution. The ruling directs the Legislature to redraw the map and submit it to Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, for his approval by Feb. 9 and then to the court for its approval by Feb. 15 so the May 15 primary can be held as scheduled.

If those deadlines are missed, the court would draw its own map “based on the evidentiary record developed.”

Pretty big national consequences.   Crazy-short deadline.   Several seats would flip if the leftist court redraws...possibly contributing to the GOP loss of the House next election.

The court can't draw the map -- that power resides in the legislature (which is still Republican).

Let them redraw it to their liking.
If they're smart (and the PA Republicans aren't that smart, really), they can retain control over the process.

Let the governor and/or the court reject it.
And it's back to square one.

There may be no better example of this than Brace's most famous (or infamous) creation: Illinois' 4th, better known as "the Earmuffs." 
It was drawn to comply with the Voting Rights Act, which mandates that racial minorities be able to elect "one of their own."  And so, he connected two Latino neighborhoods on Chicago's West Side by a narrow highway corridor
