S. Thomas Bond: Important details are lost as historical events recede from memory

Professor Richard Hartman’s commentary (Dec. 17) is very interesting and, perhaps, valuable, in view of the disgusting racial relations in America. However, it ignores how things actually were.

Slavery is an ancient institution. The Greeks and the Romans had slavery, and it doubtless goes much further back in human history. Some Indian tribes had slaves. Race was not the deciding factor, it was who lost the war in those days. People realized “someone has to do the dirty work.” The colonies inherited the institution of slavery from Great Britain, when the colonies separated.
