Schumer: Trump will be blamed for shutdown over wall
By Jordain Carney - 01/09/18 12:08 PM EST

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) warned President Trump on Tuesday that he will be blamed if the government shuts down because of a fight on the border wall.

"If the president goes down that path and insists on the wall or shut down the government, which he said back in September, make no mistake about it, a government shutdown will fall entirely, entirely on his shoulders," he said from the Senate floor.

Trump's demand that a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border be included as part of any immigration deal has emerged as the largest hurdle to getting a government funding bill.

I hate to tell you this Chucky, but by now we've all figured out how this works.....

"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I think most people would trade shutting down the government for a wall.

I'm still not sure about the logistics of a wall but we'll see what we see.

I doubt that very much.

Schumer, as usual, gets it backwards.

It should be "Trump will be CREDITED for shutdown over wall."

Then SHUT IT DOWN!! I have no problem with that if it means finally getting the wall!

The "wall" is too much a symbol of Trumpism for the Dems to provide even one vote.   But more than that,  spending billions on a physical wall is a simplistic and wasteful idea not worth fighting for, but a change to immigration policy to de-emphasize "chain" migration in favor of skills-based immigration is.    That's the compromise that Trump and the GOP should be arguing for.

What's the deficit again?

At what point can we afford NOT to shut down the government?

Yeah, so that companies like Disney can fire all the home grown labor they can and bring in a bunch of cut rate foreigners to take their place. Awesome compromise.

The Mexican border is some 2,000 miles long, silly.   There are far more efficient and effective means of improving border security - including addressing matters from the demand side.

I'm talking legal immigration, not the illegal variety.   Not "cut rate foreigners" but skilled folks who'd have to be paid the same wages and benefits as anyone else.

If employers can't get the qualified workers they need here,  they'll simply outsource to foreign locales.   Sensible legal immigration is a key to sustained domestic economic growth.

The "wall" is symbolic, not literal. It stands for stronger more effective barriers and methods of reducing illegal entry.

Discussing the "wall" means addressing a long ignored problem. Reducing illegal immigration should cut crime, cut costs of other government services, improve job prospects for low and unskilled workers.

Chuck is wrong, to think most Americans do not want this situation addressed.

Well, you're being bamboozled again.   There will be no 2,000-mile wall.  Even TS admits that the "wall" is merely symbolic.

The wall will be a symbol of American sovereignty period, and the sovereignty of this country is absolutely worth fighting for.  Absolutely, unequivocally, hell no, there will be NO compromise should be Trump's argument.  We need a physical wall along with signs hung on the wall; Anyone crossing this wall be considered any enemy of the U.S. and may be fired upon. The U.S. now has a zero tolerance policy on ILLEGAL immigration.

What is bonkers is allowing illegals to enter this country to murder, rape, rob, beat, torture, etc. our citizens (children, women and men) and if apprehended, then they sit in our jail cells at the taxpayers expense!  And, when they get out instead of shipping them back we allow them to stay here to commit more crimes.  This is the scenario that is sheer lunacy!!

By "symbolic" I mean whatever will bring about more effective border control for given terrain, geography, circumstances.

Also when talking about illegal immigration, it is necessary to improve "interior enforcement" which is fancy talk for illegals that got across, and now reside in the US.

Visa overstays exceed border crossers, for the method of illegal immigration.

People walk across sectors of the deadly Sonora Desert to gain entry. Why take the risk? Because of high probability of success.

Change that probability, and fewer will risk the crossing.

Besides 2,000 miles of land border, there is even more distance with water borders on both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico. All forms of entry must be addressed.

Legal immigrants and native born Hispanics are among big supporters of improved border control & reduced illegal immigration.

Calm down, LB.   Most illegals come here to work, not pillage and plunder.   Of course, those that do should be punished swiftly and surely.   But the "dreamers" have spent most of their lives in the United States, and effectively know no other home.  Most are as law-abiding as their situations permit them to be,  and must show themselves to be productive and educated in order to qualify for "dreamer" relief.

I am perfectly willing to normalize the dreamers in exchange for effective immigration reform.   And I am not going to wave the bloody shirt as you do to demonize men and women who in many cases work harder than native born Americans,  even as they endure exploitation and the enmity of folks like you.

Nope, not drooling at all and I've never considered myself a "Trump" supporter.  The wall should have been built in 2006 after the "Secure Fence Act" was passed by BOTH houses!!  Instead, we've allowed their numbers to increase and increasing the significant amount of money they have cost taxpayers along with increasing the significant amount of crimes that they have committed against U.S. citizens.
