Sessions will end policy that allowed legalized marijuana to prosper
By Reid Wilson - 01/04/18 08:53 AM EST

Attorney General Jeff Sessions will roll back an Obama-era policy that gave states leeway to allow marijuana for recreational purposes.

Two sources with knowledge of the decision confirmed to The Hill that Sessions will rescind the so-called Cole memo, which ordered U.S. attorneys in states where marijuana has been legalized to deprioritize prosecution of marijuana-related cases.

The Associated Press first reported the decision.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is rescinding an Obama-era policy that paved the way for legalized marijuana to flourish in states across the country, creating new confusion about enforcement and use just three days after a new legalization law went into effect in California.

President Donald Trump’s top law enforcement official was to announce the change Thursday, people with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. Instead of the previous lenient-federal-enforcement policy, Sessions’ new stance will instead let federal prosecutors where marijuana is legal decide how aggressively to enforce longstanding federal law prohibiting it, the people said.

So what is the going rate going to be to fwd prosecutors to help them decide to not aggressively enforce pot laws?

I don't like the idea of having laws passed by the Legislative Branch being ignored by the Executive. Congress needs to repeal it if they aren't going to enforce it.

Sessions is easily the worst AG the country has ever had. He has this pot fetish that overrides serious corruption in the govt', election irregularities and other real law and order issues that matter.

I've just added Jeff to my list of people who I will piss on their graves after they check out.

@Frank Cannon 6 years of lawlessness under Eric Holder and you think Sessions is worse. By any chance are you using the Russian Olympic Judges grading system?

I expect corruption and incompetence from Socialists. When it is one of our alleged guys, it's unforgivable. Sessions hasn't even cleaned out the Statist filth at Justice that has built up over the last 16 years. Now he is running around busting bell hops that have a joint in their sock for after work. Beyond the states rights issues, it is a total waste of time.

He's a total idiot.  Lots of things he should be doing and he focuses on this.

Pot is the very least of any drug worries we should have.  I think it should be legalized.  It is much safer and just as effective as a lot of prescription pain meds that are killing people every day.

Legal pain meds that are over-prescribed to people who get hooked and then obtain them illegally and often die from them.

I neither a stoner nor a dabbler but I don't see that marijuana is anything to have a hissy fit about.

It's not really addictive ... not nearly as addictive as tobacco or alcohol ... both of which are legal.

It's not as deadly as all the prescription meds people are using right and left.

Leave Pot alone.

You are incredibly wrong. I lived with two people who were addicted to marijuana. They stay stoned all day until they went to bed. My BIL is the same way now. If he is awake, he is high.

Marijuana's Dependence Liability Compared to Other Drugs

A variety of estimates have been derived from U.S. studies in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which defined cannabis use and dependence in a variety of ways. These studies suggested that between 10 and 20 per cent of those who have ever used cannabis, and between 33 and 50 per cent of those who have had a history of daily cannabis use, showed symptoms of cannabis dependence (see Hall, Solowij & Lemon, 1994). A more recent and better estimate of the risk of meeting DSM-R.III criteria for cannabis dependence was obtained from data collected in the National Comorbitity Study (Anthony, Warner & Kessler, 1994). This indicated that 9 per cent of lifetime cannabis users met DSM-R-III criteria for dependence at some time in their life, compared to 32 per cent of tobacco users, 23 per cent of opiate users and 15 per cent of alcohol users" (Hall et al. 1999)

In the recent past, several studies have attempted to compare the health risks of the most common legal and illegal drugs. Two studies received special attention: a report by order of the French Health Ministry, the so-called "Roques-Report" (Roques 1998), and a study prepared for the World Health Organization (Hall et al. 1999). Major attention was paid to dependency/addiction caused by these drugs. The main results of these studies are summarized in Tables 1 and 2 below.

If it is a law on the books the president is bound by his oath to enforce it.  Don't like the law, get it changed.

I have a friend in California who suffers from chronic, debilitating pain from severe endometriosis.   She has no insurance and no access to pain meds; pot is the only thing she has for relief.  If this bat-eared garden gnome is responsible for making her suffer even more, to hell with him.

Bite me.  And her, too, while you’re at it.  I’m sure it’s been a while.
