Capitalism’s Gotta Go

A recent survey of college students indicates that a plurality of them would prefer to live in a socialist country. Critics have complained that these results show college students have little knowledge about the real world, which is filled with failed socialist states. This is largely true, no doubt. But I think there’s another deeper reason for students’ embrace of socialism.

Socialism stands for free stuff, and there are few things students like more than stuff that’s free. Also, socialism sounds like “social” and “sociability,” and everyone knows that if more people had those qualities the world would be a much better place.

Given the indoctrinations they have received at school for their entire lives we should expect no less.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I've been saying much the same and for a long time. Why people cling to this confusing term as though it were holy writ is beyond me.

Profit? To defend profit you might point out that every living thing must profit from its activities or it must die.

This isn't about them but about 'us.'

No doubt about that and I'm as guilty as anyone else but I will tell you this. If I am ever blessed with any grandchildren (becoming increasingly unlikely by the day) I will move heaven and earth to make sure they never see the inside of a public school.

@Sanguine
I don't exactly disagree with the article, but there is a much more profound reason why college students prefer socialism:  it is because the Socialist movement is profoundly antichristian and also stupidly anti-Semitic (even if a fair number of Socialists are ethnic Jews).

To illustrate this, let me point out that college students are enamored with multiculturalism--enamored to a degree that is almost inexplicably crazy.  Many if not most college students have bought into the insane idea that the Global Socialists have peddled in Europe to the effect that we need more Muslims in Western Civilization.  Of course, the Globalists in Europe are just trying to destroy Judeo-Christian society.

We are living in an era of massive reprobation in America, but especially in our youth.

Doc, I agree with pretty much everything you wrote there.

Regarding anti-semitism and communism/socialism, I am reading a book on the Ukrainian Holodomor right now, and it seems Stalin in particular was very anti-semetic (and, anti-peasant).  Seems Jews made good communists, but not such good bolsheviks.  And, peasants were stubbornly self-sufficient.

Could you give us the title of that book?  I would like to read it.

Here's the Amazon link:  https://www.amazon.com/Red-Famine-Stalins-War-Ukraine-ebook/dp/B01N9S7B80/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514480419&sr=8-1&keywords=anne+applebaum

I'm reading it because she lines out the tactics and techniques developed and employed by the Russian communists to overtake other countries and turn their populace.  You will find it very informative, and as the old saying goes: "history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes."

The academics see "socialism," as Norway, but not as "Venezuela."

They overlook entirely the failed USSR, which failed economically because the basic premise failed.

In reality the best examples of Norway, Sweden, Denmark prosper because they have (had) homogenous populations of educated modern people. And the engine of their success is capitalism, free enterprise firms that pay a lot of taxes. They are "mixed" economies.

Install socialism/communism in primitive "hunter-gatherer" societies and they remain hunter gatherer societies.

If you conducted surveys in former USSR satellites in Eastern /Europe, those folks would likely tell you they prefer capitalism, to socialism.

Those people identify with the US, not with Russia or Cuba.

I once had a conversation with a high school teacher. She had an MS in "education." She spouted off the socialist crap. I asked her how many econ. classes her undergrad and grad. curriculum included. Zero, zed, nada, nichts.

I really liked "Autopsy for an Empire : The Seven Leaders Who Built the Soviet Regime" by Dmitri Volkogonov, especially the parts where Lenin just threw away the country's riches to any "revolutionary" who asked.

Like many SJWs of today, the Bolsheviks thought that many non-socialists with important jobs were simply placed there due to connections or bribes. They believed they could put anybody, any commie socialist, in those positions without losing competency.
So shortly after they took over in Russia,  the Bolsheviks replaced some bourgeois old guy who ran the waterworks in some big Russian town with some incompetent commie flunky.  The commie didn't know what he was doing, and the waterworks system for the city quickly degenerated into chaos.
In a short period of time they had to bring back the  non-socialist, old guy to bring the system back to order.
Of course, commies and socialists today are scarcely different. They wreck everything they touch.
