What Congress actually did in 2017

It wasn't all partisan gridlock: 97 bills made it into law this year. Here's what you might have missed.

April 4, 2017, wasn’t an especially notable day for news. But it was a big day for America’s meteorologists.

That Tuesday afternoon, the House of Representatives quietly passed legislation to overhaul the nation’s weather forecasting system, sending to President Donald Trump’s desk the first big revamp of that critical piece of national infrastructure in more than two decades. The 98-page bill authorized more than $170 million worth of investment, including innovative projects like a set of microsatellites to watch for severe weather events and track space weather. The upgrades not only affect meteorologists but are expected to help save lives through better storm planning, smarter disaster response and more reliable weather predictions weeks or even months in advance.

Thing is, I don't recall Republicans promising to overhaul the national weather forecasting system.  What they did promise -- repeal of Obamacare, tax reform, combatting illegal immigration, and so forth -- have not bee done or only done halfway.  Oh sure, they passed what they call tax reform and yes, it did away with the Obamacare mandate.  But Obamacare is still here and that tax legislation, while it would be good for some, doesn't really reform our tax system because nobody in DC wants to do what should be done -- scrap the system altogether and replace it with one that is really fair.

And we don't have a real budget or any effort to curb runaway spending.  We don't have Trump's wall.  Illegals are still coming in and we still have an influx of  Middle Eastern "refugees" who may or may not be ISIS operators -- because no one will even consider implementing an effective way of thoroughly vetting everyone who comes into this country.

Sorry, guys, but congress is still the same corrupt, lazy and ineffective bunch it always has been.  These are not major accomplishments.  They are propaganda to make our leaders look good.
