Oil-rich Venezuela is out of gas

...“Gentlemen: There is no more gasoline in Venezuela. In Venezuela, we are out of gas. In Venezuela, there is no gas oil. In Venezuela, there are no lube oils,” said Iván Freites in a televised press conference. Freites is the secretary of the professional and technician division of the United Federation of Venezuelan Petroleum Workers.

In his address, Freites said that poor management led to the stoppage of 80 per cent of the country’s refineries. “Only Amuay and Cardón refineries are operative and that is nothing. They produce 40,000 barrels per day and the national demand is over 200,000 barrels of gas per day,” he said.

Venezuela’s oil production has fallen to levels not seeing since the late-1980s. According to the latest OPEC report, which is based on information provided by the Nicolás Maduro government, the country is producing about 2.3 million barrels of oil per day. In October, it experienced the steepest fall in production of 2017, as only 1.9 million barrels were extracted, 130,000 barrels less than the previous month. The oil industry, however, is still the major source of income as it generates about 96 per cent of the foreign exchange...

In the 1980s my company upgraded the refinery  owned by "Lagoven," a partner of Exxon.

Now days apparently they STILL do  not have the technical expertise to engineer, build and maintain refineries.

It is not a new problem. My father worked in the oil drilling bit industry for a time in the early 1950s. His company had sent people to Russia, to train them with drilly equipment. They could not learn to MAINTAIN IT, however.

Apparently it is not a Russian or Latin thing, but rather a communist thing.

I know quite a few people, including some natives of Venezuela,  who used to work in the oil industry there.  They were among the first to get the hell out of the country when they saw what was coming years ago.  I strongly suspect that the same thing happened in everything that requires some level of technical competence to operate.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I also know a number of Venezuelan engineers.  Most are very competent, and the companies they work for mostly in Houston are glad they are there.

It is not the Venezuelan people who are ignorant.  It is communism, pure and simple.

I don't see how anyone can doubt that.

Socialist believe smart capable people will work hard so others that didn't do the work can take it...

And every time they try it it doesn't work the way they think it will... The smart capable people flee. And the ones who can't lie low to avoid becoming slaves.

And it is always someone else's fault when shortages and economic failure follow...

It is a basic contradiction socialist refuse to accept because they demand something for nothing and say it isn't fair when they don't get their piece of someone else's work. It really is a form of insanity rooted in greed and envy that causes wide scale misery whenever they get authority over others.
